Our NFL handicapper has issues with trust and sees a team in Week 6 that is playing the role of a pretender. Read on as he breaks down the game between Rams and Lions concluding with an NFL pick.

Los Angeles Rams vs Detroit Lions

Feeling pretty good after nailing both Game 4’s of the NLDS, so let’s roll right into football as the surprising Los Angeles Rams of Pasadena travel to the Motor City to face the Detroit Lions. The Rams are 3-2 on the season, but there are some signs that their success so far is a mirage. For one, their point differential of -24 is the worst of any 3-win team in the league. Second, they are the Rams and winning seasons don’t come easy for Jeff Fischer coached teams. Detroit is already in trouble this year as well and are three games back of the division lead at 2-3, with the Minnesota Vikings at 5-0 and in control of the NFC North. Detroit is coming off of a win against the Philadelphia Eagles, putting the Carson Wentz fanatics in their place at home 24-23.

The opening NFL odds have the home team Lions as the default 3-point favorites, making this a very even matchup from a book makers point of view. The O/U total is all over the place at the moment, a fact that gives a great argument for having multiple accounts set up to take advantage of hedging possibilities. The O/U total is listed from 44 at Pinnacle down to 43 at 5Dimes, now offering 50% free plays.

The Rams will be hard pressed to stop the Detroit passing game with their injuries on the defensive line. They didn’t’ exactly allow Tyrod Taylor to go nuts with 12 completions ,124 yards, and 2 touchdowns, but they couldn’t stop the run to save their life. Los Angeles allowed LeSean McCoy to accrue 150 yards on just 18 carries in their Week 5 game.

Speaking of running game, the Lions just picked up free agent, Justin Forsett, to bolster their depleted backfield. Although injuries to running backs has been a convenient excuse for the poor running game of the Lions over the last few week, look no further than the injuries of their big run-blocking tight ends as the main culprit that new hands haven’t been able to pick up the slack.

Final Analysis

These teams met just last year with the Rams winning a slow starting game in which they led 7-0 at halftime. They held the Lions to just 220 yards passing in that game, while picking up 203 yards on the ground themselves. That performance is going to be very hard to duplicate this year with so many injuries on the defensive line for the Rams. I also can’t trust a team such as the Rams yet after their road loss to the hapless San Francisco 49ers 28-0 in Week 1. A team that is capable of laying such an egg is dangerous to back. I know that the Lions have their faults, but they are the team to back at home and I am taking the Lions -3 at Heritage as my Week 6 NFL pick.
