While it's the annual battle for Gotham City, it will be played across the bridge in New Jersey and the opening NFL odds from the sportsbooks have New York favored to win.

Oh you want to know which New York team, oh OK. I was just funning with you, the Giants are modest favorites and listed as the home team, as both prepare to do battle Saturday night.

As it turns out, this is just the appetizer, as these two New Yorkers will meet again on Dec. 6th during the regular season in a real football game. For now, this will do for sports picks in Week 3 of the preseason.

Jets Report -
The Jets are coming off a 30-22 victory over Atlanta as 2.5 point favorites to square their record at 1-1 SU and ATS. For quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick to be successful in this game or during the regular season, he needs a strong running game and top notch defense, because he is too turnover -prone to be a consistent starting quarterback in the NFL.

The defense certainly should be strong, with great players along the defensive line and rookie defensive end Leonard Williams has played like a beast purely on instinct thus far. Of course the addition of corner Derrelle Revis will be a huge plus along.

Chris Ivory will get the bulk of the carries and he will be very important for anyone wanting to use the Jets for NFL picks because of his explosiveness and ability to move the chains. Nevertheless, whether it is Fitzgerald or when Geno Smith returns, Gang Green does not have the quarterback to fill the air with footballs thrown to Brandon Marshall or Eric Decker to win consistently.

Giants Report -
The Giants also squared their record at 1-1 SU and ATS in handling Jacksonville 22-12 as four-point favorites versus the NFL odds. However, the victory proved costly, as more safeties went down in the secondary,  middle linebacker Jon Beason suffered a sprained knee and we also know about Jason Pierre-Paul's skill for lighting firecrackers.

This week the Giants will have to bring in new safeties from the scrap heap and with Pierre-Paul's return unknown, this New York team will have to manufacture pressure with blitzing by defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, leaving them susceptible on the backend. Beason stated on Monday he should be ready for the season opener, with time to tell if that is accurate.

While this could turn into a large problem, Eli Manning has an embarrassment of riches on the perimeter in Odell Beckman Jr., Victor Cruz, Rueben Randle and Larry Donnell and let's not forget about the addition of Shane Vereen as a duel threat. Though the offense has not looked sharp this preseason, the Jets defense will provide an excellent test to see where the G-Men's offense actually is.

Expected Quarterback Rotations

Jets - Fitzpatrick - Bryce Petty - Jake Heaps

Giants - Manning - Ryan Nessib - Ricky Stanzi

Odds and What to Look For
The Giants opened as a 1.5-point favorite at Wagerweb with a total of 42.5. Though the crowd will be primarily a Giants-backed contingent, there will be plenty of fans dressed in green to support their squad.

There is not much to choose from between these teams, with the Jets having the better defense and the Giants the better offense. Now this is hardly handicapping 101, yet sometimes you just have to except certain numbers at face value.

Though both teams play at MetLife Stadium and alternate this annual affair who the home team is, the "visitor" the last eight years is 7-1 and 8-0 ATS. For whatever reason, this exhibition has always meant more to the Jets, which is why they are 15-7 and 15-6-1 ATS since 1993. As an NFL handicapper, I wish I had a mire scientific reason for backing the Flyboys, but I don't and with them in the visiting role and 21-7 ATS if the opposing team is off a SU win and cover, I will throw my support in that direction.
