An NFC North rivalry with big divisional implications features when the Lions and Vikings collide, both looking to bounce back following losses in week 9. Here’s a preview complete with NFL picks.

   Detroit Lions vs Minnesota Vikings

Point Spread

The Detroit Lions are 4-4-0 SU and ATS on the season with a -0.9 losing margin on average and -0.6 differential against the spread. By those stats, +7 is way too many points to be giving the Lions. On the road, they are 1-3 SU and ATS with a -3.2 losing margin and -1.8 differential versus the spread. Even by those stats, +7 is way too many points to be giving the Lions. On the flipside, the Vikings are 5-2-0 SU and ATS with a 5.0 winning margin and+3.4 differential versus the spread. By those stats, it’s way too many points to lay with the Vikings. Take the Lions plus the points on your week 9 NFL picks.

The Survivor

All of a sudden, things heat up in the NFC North. Vikings drop two straight and slip to 5-2 SU proffering a great opportunity for their title rivals Packers and (to a lesser extent) Lions to close the gap. Crucially, one of those losses came to divisional rivals Chicago Bears in week 8 and that has Minnesota slip to a 1-1 divisional record (Packers are 2-1 and Lions are 0-2, while the Bears are 2-1). Things could get much closer than most expected they would only a few weeks ago when the Vikings were undefeated and looking for all the world the part of NFC North champions. The way things stack up in the division places a premium on the win. The Vikings will be desperate to stop the rot and capitalize on a date with the Lions that are so-so on their travels. A three-game winning streak by Detroit came to a screeching halt last week against a stout Houston defense. Lions are 1-3 SU on the road, highlighted by a -3.2 losing record and a -1.6 differential versus the spread.

By all accounts, the Vikings should win but the Lions could win. After all, didn’t the Vikings just lose to the hapless Chicago Bears? That must take the shine off of Minnesota and send the Lions with a measure of optimism into this game.

Game Total

The Vikings are consistent UNDER performers in the market with a 2-5-0 OVER record. It’s just the way they are built, around a stout defense that seems to dictate proceedings whether they are winning or losing. It’s more likely than not that side of the ball will prevail in this matchup, despite the hot hand that Matthew Stafford can be at times.
