A scintillating showdown is on the cards for Sunday Night Football, a highly-anticipated AFC West clash between top teams Denver Broncos and Oakland Raiders. We preview this game and serve up choice NFL picks.

   Denver Broncos vs Oakland Raiders

Point Spread Value

Denver Broncos enter this highly anticipated AFC West showdown as the slight road underdogs laying +1.5 or less. It’s a tight NFL betting outlook based in part on the current AFC West standings that has this pair knotted up on a 6-2-0 SU record. Broncos, however, contrary to the NFL odds, do have the slight edge according to NFL betting trends. They are 6-2-0 ATS with a 7.2 winning margin and a +4.6 differential versus the spread. On the road, they are 2-1-0 SU and ATS away with an 8.0 winning margin on average and +7 differential versus the spread. By contrast, the Raiders are 5-3-0 ATS with a 1.5 winning margin and +1.6 differential versus the spread. At home, they are 0-3-0 ATS with a -6.7 losing margin and a -8.8 differential versus the spread. Of course, games aren’t played on paper, but, admittedly, those stats don’t endorse the Raiders in any way as the choice week 9 NFL pick.

The Survivor

Although the Raiders are 6-2-0 SU on the season they are a telling 0-2 SU against winning teams, which is significant in this matchup. For all the thrills the Raiders have served up thus far, one could argue they’re only as good as their opponents were bad. The teams they’ve beaten include the Saints, Titans, Ravens, Chargers, Jaguars and Bucs, of which only Tennessee currently boasts a .500 record. The rest hover under .500. Until the Raiders can beat a bona fide contender it’s best to take the 6-2-0 record in its proper context. The Broncos are definitely contenders, not because they are the defending Super Bowl champions but rather the current instalment with Trevor Siemian at centre is 6-2-0 SU on the season behind wins over credible opponents and elite quarterbacks including Carolina, Cincinnati, Indianapolis and Houston, to name a few.

 Game Total

With the leakiest defense in the league, it’s no surprise the Raiders boast a 6-2-0 OVER record this season. Granted Derek Carr and the O-line are doing their part as well to put up the points. Well, they have to cover for the shortcomings of their defense. The Broncos are a more disciplined lot and their defense is renowned. Predictably, they’re 4-4-0 in total betting. It’s a right tossup which way this game will go on the scoreboard. Denver’s passing defense is sure to give Derek Carr some headaches, but Denver also has one of the best scoring defenses. It would also be churlish to deny the Raiders’ O-line their due, they’re a talented bunch and know how to put up the points. So we’re shading the OVER on our NFL picks for this week 9 AFC West showdown.
