It’s time to take the NFC East seriously again. Washington might be sharing a basement suite right now with the New York Giants, but both teams beat the football lines in Week 3, and they’re about to feature in prime time on Thursday.

Jason’s Record After Week 3: 6-13 ATS, 3-3-1 Totals

Once upon a time, Thursday night was the most important night in television. Now CBS is bringing back the mojo it had when Magnum, P.I. was still solving crimes. Thursday Night Football has been crushing the competition after three weeks; even last Thursday’s laugher between the Atlanta Falcons and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers managed to draw over 7.3 million viewers in the States, nearly as many as NBC and ABC combined. And that was just for the pregame show. Viewership for the game itself reached 11.9 million. Plus another 2.3 million cable subscribers who watched on the NFL Network.

Expect those numbers to rise this week. We’ve got an old-school rivalry game coming up at The Fed between Washington and the New York Football Giants. Yes, they’re tied for last in the NFC East at 1-2, but Washington is on a 2-0 ATS streak with Kirk Cousins at quarterback, while New York is coming off a very impressive 30-17 win over the Houston Texans (+1 away). Our NFL odds board at press time shows the Giants getting 3.5 points, down from 5.5 points when the Week 4 football lines opened on Sunday.

Captain Kirk
First and foremost, kudos to Kirk Cousins. He might not have the same athletic gifts as Robert Griffin III, but at least all his limbs are in working order, and his pocket presence seems to fit Washington’s offense under head coach Jay Gruden. As you already know, Cousins lit up the Philadelphia Eagles for 427 yards passing and three TDs last week. That was the No. 4-ranked performance (142 Total DYAR) of all the starting quarterbacks in Week 3, according to the efficiency stats at Football Outsiders.

The numbers weren’t quite as kind to Eli Manning, but he still did an admirable job against Houston, finishing the day with 78 Total DYAR (No. 12 overall) and a pair of TD passes. Manning even connected with Victor Cruz for the first time in 51 weeks. Looks like things are finally clicking for new offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo. These transitions can take time, so if you’ve been patient with the G-Men, you’re getting rewarded now.

Ihenacho Libre
You’ll need a little more patience if you’re waiting for the NFL debut of Giants WR Odell Beckham. He was limited in Tuesday’s practice due to his lingering hamstring injury, and is once again being left inactive as a precaution. LB Jon Beason (toe) was also treated with kid gloves on Tuesday, although his status for Thursday’s matchup (8:30 p.m. ET) remains unknown as we go to press.

It’s been a rough year for injuries in the Big Apple, and across the league in general, but Washington is definitely getting the worst of it. In addition to losing CB DeAngelo Hall to a torn Achilles, the secondary will have to do without safety Duke Ihenacho (broken left foot) for the rest of the year. Ihenacho was an important depth player who also played a role on special teams – and it’s not like Washington can afford to lose anyone else on a special teams unit that already ranks dead-last in the NFL. There’s a metric ton of other banged-up players on the Washington roster, enough that we’re going to stand on the shoulders of the Giants this week with our NFL pick.
