Saskatchewan Overview

The Roughriders qualified for the postseason last year by finishing third in the West Division, but they still only won eight games against 10 losses. They lost to Calgary 36-30 in the division semifinals in a game that ended-up as a PUSH. Overall, they were 8-10-1 against the spread, but a costly 3-6-1 ATS on the road. Heading into this season, Saskatchewan has been opened at +600 to win the Grey Cup title in 2013.

If they are going to have any shot at making good on the odds the Roughriders are going to need a big effort from quarterback Darian Durant. He finished the 2012 season with 3,878 passing yards and 20 touchdowns while completing a respectable 64.4 percent of his throws. They will also need running back Kory Sheets to come up big after finishing 2012 ranked second in the CFL in total rushing yards with 1,277 while adding 11 scores on the ground.

Edmonton Overview

Edmonton only won seven games last season against 11 losses but that was still good enough to land a spot in the playoffs as a crossover team from the West. It faced eventually Grey Cup Champion Toronto in the division semifinals, but fell 42-26 as a four-point road underdog. The Eskimos went 10-9 ATS overall and a profitable 6-3 ATS at home. The total went OVER in six of the nine home games. They have been opened at +800 to go all the way this season.

Slotback Fred Stamps remains one of Edmonton’s biggest weapons on offense. He finished 2012 ranked second in the CFL in total receiving yards after hauling in 70 receptions for 1,310 yards and nine touchdowns. It looks like the Eskimos are going with Mike Reilly as their starting quarterback for this season opener after Matt Nichols was lost for the season with a torn ACL. The fourth-year vet was acquired from British Columbia this offseason after starting three games for the Lions last season.

Saskatchewan vs. Edmonton Betting Lines and Trends

CFL betting lines still have this game listed as a PICK with the total line set at 50. One or two books have Edmonton as a one-point home favorite so the line may move in that direction as we get closer to game time.

The Roughriders are 1-6-1 ATS in their last eight road games and 2-5-1 ATS in their last eight West Division games. The total has gone OVER in four of their last five games overall.

The Eskimos are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 home games but just 3-8 ATS in their last 11 season openers. The total has gone OVER in six of their last seven games.

Saskatchewan is just 3-7 ATS in the last 10 meetings in this matchup and 1-5 ATS in its last six trips to Edmonton. The total has stayed UNDER in 14 of the last 18 games played in Edmonton.

Saskatchewan vs. Edmonton Free CFL Pick

These two division rivals matchup very close to one another, so I am leaning on the trend that the home team is 9-1 SU in the last 10 meetings in a game that is currently listed as a ‘PICK’. The free sports pick in this matchup is Edmonton winning a tight one at home.
