Saskatchewan Overview

The surprising Roughriders entered last week’s bye with a perfect 5-0 record both straight-up and against the spread this season. They had already beaten Calgary 36-21 in Week 2 as 2.5-point home favorites and overall they have outscored their opponents by a combined 96 points. The total has stayed ‘Under’ in their last two games after going ‘Over’ in their first three.

The reason for Saskatchewan’s early success has been an offense that has averaged 36.6 points a game behind the elevated play of quarterback Darian Durant, who leads the CFL in touchdown throws with 12. The Roughriders have also gotten a solid effort from running back Jon Cornish. He is ranked second in the league in rushing with 501 yards. Also give credit to the stingiest defense in the CFL that has held teams to just 17.4 points a game.

Calgary Overview

Other than the Week 2 loss to its rival, Calgary has been perfect as well with a 4-1 start SU and ATS. The total has gone ‘Over’ in four of its first five games. This is another team that knows how to put points on the board with a total of 162 in five games. The offense should get a boost for this contest with the return of Drew Tate as the starting quarterback after using the time off to get healthy. In limited action so far, Tate has thrown for 468 yards and five touchdowns while completing 73.1 percent of his attempts.

The Stampeders’ defense is not nearly as stout as their rivals; allowing an average of 26.6 points a game, but it has held teams below that average in two of its last three contests. Charleston Hughes and Cordarro Law have combined for seven sacks and defensive back Brandon Smith leads the team in tackles with 18.

Head-to-head despite the early-season loss, Calgary is still 7-2 SU in the last nine meetings overall and 5-1 SU it its last six games at home against the Roughriders. The Stamps have failed to cover in the last in four of the last five meetings.

Saskatchewan vs. Calgary Free CFL Pick

While you never want to bet against a hot team, this is a good week to get off the Roughriders’ bandwagon. Calgary is a much better team with Tate back under center and while this one will remain tight until the final gun, the free CFL pick is the Stampeders minus the three points.
