Edmonton Overview

Edmonton’s extremely thin playoff hopes all but disappeared with last Saturday’s 47-24 loss to Montreal as a three-point home favorite. It is now 3-11 straight-up on the year and 6-8 against the spread after covering in five of its previous eight games. The total has gone ‘Over’ in eight of its last 10 games. The Eskimos are averaging 24.3 points a game, but giving-up an average of 29.2 points a game to their opponents.

Mike Reilly has taken the majority of the snaps this season for Edmonton and he is ranked third in the CFL in passing with 3,345 yards. He has also proven to be a duel threat with his legs after adding another 539 yards on a ground, which is the sixth highest total in the league. Consistency on defense in the Eskimos’ last two games has been a major issue after giving-up 23 points to Toronto in a fourth quarter collapse in Week 14. It was then torched for 31 points in the first half against Montreal.

Saskatchewan Overview

The Roughriders started the season 8-1 SU, but followed that up with a four-game slide as favorites in all four contests. They finally got back to their winning ways with an impressive 31-17 victory over British Columbia last Friday as three-point underdogs on the road. Saskatchewan is now 9-5 SU (7-7 ATS) and two games behind Calgary in the chase for the West Division title. The total has stayed ‘Under’ in four of its last five games.

This team has been extremely balanced on offense this season with its ability to both pass and run the ball. Darian Durant is ranked second in the CFL in passing with 3,595 yards and he leads in touchdown throws with 28. The return of Kory Sheets to the lineup against the Lions got the team’s ground game back on track. He is currently ranked second in the league in rushing with 1,302 yards on 227 carries. Saskatchewan has also remained stingy on defense; allowing an average of just 22.6 points a game.

Edmonton vs. Saskatchewan Betting Lines and Trends

Early CFL odds opened the Roughriders as 10-point home favorites for this West Division showdown with the total line set at 54.5.

The Eskimos are 2-6 ATS in their last eight games against the West Division and 2-5 ATS in their last seven games played on a Saturday. The total has gone ‘Over’ in 10 of their last 12 road games.

The Roughriders are 10-26 ATS in their last 36 games against a team with a losing record but 13-6 ATS in their last 19 games following a SU win. The total has gone ‘Over’ in five of their last seven games against the West.

Head-to-head in this division rivalry, Edmonton has a slight 6-4 edge both SU and ATS in the last 10 meetings with the total going ‘Over’ in the last four. Saskatchewan has won both meetings this season SU on the road.

Edmonton vs. Saskatchewan Free CFL Pick

In a division matchup between two teams headed in opposite directions, I am going with the one that has the clear edge on both sides of the ball. The Roughriders have already dominated this season’s series with two victories on the road, so the free CFL pick in this contest is a third win that covers the 10 points at home.
