Calgary Overview

The Stampeders took care of business in last week’s home opener against another West rival, the BC Lions, with a 44-32 victory as 3.5-point favorites. The total easily went OVER the 52-point line. This was a key first win for Calgary in light if the fact that the Lions were favored to once again win the division this year.

The game against BC was never really close as Calgary rolled to a 31-6 halftime lead behind the legs of Jon Cornish. The seventh-year running back finished the game with 172 yards on 24 carries and two touchdowns. Drew Tate got the call at quarterback and added another 237 yards and three scores through the air. You could say that this total team effort was about as good as it gets for last season’s Grey Cup runner-up.

Saskatchewan Overview

The Roughriders also started the season with a crucial division win by knocking-off Edmonton 39-18 as 2.5-point road favorites. The total went OVER the 51-point closing line. Behind a smothering defense and an opportunistic offense, Saskatchewan was able to build a 22-1 lead at the half that proved to be more enough. The final score was not indicative to just how lopsided this game really was.

Darian Durant went the majority of the way at quarterback and ended the night completing 14-of-22 attempts for 171 yards and three scoring strikes. The Roughriders had seven different players catch at least one pass in this game and Kory Sheets anchored the running game with 131 yards on 17 carries. The best takeaway from this victory was the play of a defense that recorded three interceptions and two forced fumbles.
