CFL Game Preview and Free Pick- Winnipeg Blue Bombers vs. Edmonton Eskimos

Something has to give this upcoming Saturday when the Winnipeg Blue Bombers square-off against the Edmonton Eskimos in a clash between the two bottom feeders in the CFL this year. Kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m. (PT) and the game will be broadcast in Canada on TSN.

Winnipeg Overview

Winnipeg was mired in a seven-game losing streak heading into this past Sunday’s game against the CFL’s best team, but it may have saved some hope for a turnaround with a stunning 25-13 victory over Saskatchewan as an 8.5-point home underdog. The Blue Bombers are now 2-8 straight-up and 4-6 against the spread. The total stayed UNDER the 55.5-point line in that game and it has now stayed UNDER in three of their last five games.

Sunday’s win was fueled by Will Ford’s 98-yard kick return for touchdown, but you also have to give a ton a credit to a Winnipeg defense that held the league’s highest scoring team to just 13 points. Justin Goltz got the start at quarterback and while he only completed 47 percent of his passes for 129 yards, he was a big part of the win as well with another 56 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

Edmonton Overview

The Blue Bomber’s win combined with the Eskimos’ 22-12 loss to Calgary as three-point home underdogs officially leaves Edmonton alone at the bottom of the CFL. It was its eight-straight loss and ninth in 10 games. The Eskimos have been somewhat better ATS lately with a 3-1 record in their last four games, but Friday’s loss dropped their record ATS on the year to 4-6. The total stayed UNDER the 56.5-point line against the Stampeders after going OVER in seven of their first nine games.

It is hard seeing things getting much better on a team that has been plagued by turmoil in its front office off the field and sloppy play on both sides of the ball on the field. The Eskimos are ranked second-to-last in scoring with an average of 23.4 points a game and their defense is allowing an average of 29.4 points a game to its opponents. Mike Reilly has thrown for 2,471 yards while adding another 417 yards on the ground, but the only real bright spot has been the play of slotback Fred Stamps. He leads the CFL in receiving yards with 765 on 40 catches with seven going for scores.

Winnipeg vs. Edmonton Betting Lines and Trends

Edmonton has been listed as a 4.5-point home favorite by TopBet on its opening CFL betting lines. The total for this game has been set at 53.5.

The Blue Bombers are 2-5 ATS in their last seven games and 1-5 SU in their last six games on the road. The total has stayed UNDER in five of their last six road games.

The Eskimos are 4-8 ATS in their last 12 games overall and 0-5 SU in their last five games at home. The total has gone OVER in six of their last eight home games.

Head-to-head in this inter-division clash, Edmonton has a slight 6-4 SU edge in the last 10 meetings while Winnipeg is 6-4 ATS. The total has gone OVER in the last two games after staying UNDER in six of the previous seven contests.

Winnipeg vs. Edmonton Predictions

Both teams have had their fair share of issues this season, but last week’s win over the Roughriders gives Winnipeg some much needed momentum heading into this matchup. Edmonton appears to already be riding out the string which makes the free CFL pick in this matchup the Blue Bombers plus the 4.5 points.
