The annual Battle of New York is set to take place on Friday night, as the Giants and Jets hook up at MetLife Stadium. The NFL Odds have this game as an even pick em’, with a total of 42 ½ points. We preview this matchup and help you decide where to place your NFL picks.

Battle of New York
This game being in the third week of the preseason makes it even more appealing, because for what should be most of the game, we will see the starters for both teams in the game. While the offenses for both teams need some work and tuning before the season begins, the defense in this game should be the story once the clock strikes zero.

The Jets already had a god defense, and it appears they’ll be one of the better units in football once again. So far this preseason, even though the starters haven’t played very much, the Jets have still given up only 27 points through two games.

The Giants’ defense is also going to be pretty good this season. They brought in several new starters in both the front seven and the secondary, and so far this preseason they have shown well. In their game against the Steelers two weeks ago, they starters only gave up a field goal, and even though they gave up three scores to the Colts in Week 2, this unit still has some upside.

This could be a trend to follow this season, and it has already been a trend in the last three preseason meetings between the Giants and Jets. Since 2011, this total of 42 ½ points would have easily cashed the under in regulation. Last preseason their game went into overtime, which spoiled the under winning. However the two before were very low scoring, and the average final total in the last three meetings in New York is 31. Their two preseason games in 2012 and 2011 both didn’t get out of the 20s.

The Sharp Pick
With all of this considered, it seems like laying off this even spread and going with the total could be the way to take advantage of these NFL odds. Even though both teams cashed the over in their last preseason contest, the under has still been trending for both teams. Dating back to the 2013 regular season, the under is 4-1 in the Giants’ last five games. For the Jets, the over against Cincinnati was the first time the over has cashed in a Jets game since Week 15 of 2013.

The Jets are going to get their secondary issues nailed out, and it might come in this game. The Giants are still trying to implement a new offense, and against a good team like New York, that might be harder than you think. With both teams sporting unbeaten preseason records, laying off of picking a winner entirely is the way to go. I am going with the under in this one, and I recommend you do the same.
