This might just easily have been our LONE RANGER contrary play of the week. The Atlanta Falcons visit the Carolina Panthers for this 1:00 ET kick. It is the first divisional meeting of the year for these teams, who will have a rematch in Atlanta in week 16 of the NFL season. This week, however, is a great contrary opportunity for the Panthers to feel the pressure.

Carolina Panthers
Carolina nearly succumbed last week to the pressure of being the only undefeated team in the NFL. They turned the ball over three times, yet survived the home underdog threat of New Orleans to emerge with a (41-38) victory. They did outrush the Saints 34/175 to 14/70, and out passed them 322-264, for an overall yardage edge of 497-334 in a (41-38) victory. The win marked the Panthers 16th straight regular season victory, and was the 10th consecutive time the offense had put up 27 or more points. The 12-0 SU Panthers’ win streak is for real. Carolina outrushes foes 34/142 to 22/87, outgains them 361-314, and outscores them 31-20. A strong running game, hard-nosed defense, and quickly maturing QB Newton have led the way in the victories. The 12-0 SU mark means the Panthers have a two game edge on Arizona for the #1 seed in the NFC. As such, it will not be a surprise if they begin to feel the pressure. And it would be no surprise if they did not take these Atlanta Falcons very seriously.

Atlanta Falcons
For first year HC Quinn, Atlanta bolted from the gate at 5-0 SU, 4-1 ATS, but it has been all downhill since a 1-6 SU, 0-7 ATS record that has seen them defeat only lowly Tennessee (10-7). An interesting side light to that nosedive is that the Falcons were a PICK or favored in all those contests. As a result, the underdog is now 16-3 ATS recently in Atlanta games. Though the Falcons’ offense has failed to eclipse the 21 point mark in any of the last seven games, there is clearly potential with QB Ryan at the helm. It is also noteworthy that none of the Atlanta losses this year have been by more than 10 points, with four of the last five losses being by 4 or fewer points. Last week, in their (23-19) loss to Tampa Bay, they were competitive the entire contest, despite the fact they were outrushed 166-64. Despite having dropped to 6-6 SU for the season, the Falcons are just one game behind Seattle for the second Wild Card spot in the NFC. With the motivation of playing an undefeated division rival, and the hopes of a playoff berth, it is no surprise that Atlanta stays competitive in this game throughout.

I invite you to put the NFL odds in your favor and join me in my NFL picks on the Atlanta Falcons as the BIG DOG OF THE WEEK.
