Two of the top teams in the NFC this season kick off Week 6 in the NFL this Thursday night with the 4-1 Philadelphia Eagles going on the road to face the 4-1 Carolina Panthers.

Philadelphia Eagles at Carolina Panthers (-3.5, 45)

The Eagles moved to 4-1 straight-up on the year with a 3-2 record against the spread in convincing fashion with last Sunday’s 34-7 romp over Arizona as 6-point home favorites. The total stayed UNDER the closing 45-point line in that game after going OVER in their previous three Eagles outings. Philadelphia has started the season with a 2-1 record on the road SU and ATS.

With Carson Wentz leading the offense through the air and LeGarrette Blount leading the way on the ground, Philadelphia has established one of the most balanced offenses in the league. This unit is ranked eighth in passing yards and fifth in rushing while averaging 397.8 yards of total offense. Defensively, the Eagles remain a bit shaky against the pass, but they are second in the NFL at stopping the run.

Carolina slipped to 6-10 last season following its run to the Super Bowl in 2015, but at 4-1 SU (3-1-1 ATS) it is back on track in the NFC South with a half-game lead over Atlanta. The Panthers sweated out a tight 27-24 victory last Sunday at Detroit as 2-point underdogs in a game that easily went OVER the closing 41.5-point total line. The total has now gone OVER in the Cats' last three games.

One of the main reasons for Carolina’s success in that Super Bowl season was the play of Cam Newton as the league’s Most Valuable Player. Coming off a shoulder injury he got off to a slow start this season, but his return to form his past two starts has been a welcomed sight for Panthers fans. Newton threw for 316 yards and three touchdowns in a Week 4 victory at New England before lighting up Detroit for 355 yards and three scores. Carolina’s defense has done its part by holding opposing teams to an average of 274 total yards per game.

Betting Trends
  • The Eagles are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 road games, but they have been able to cover in four of their last five games against a conference opponent. The total has gone OVER in 13 of their last 16 games played on the road.
  • The Panthers have failed to cover in five of their last six games at home and they are 2-6 ATS in their last eight games played on a Thursday. The total has gone OVER or ended as a PUSH in six of their last seven games played at home against a team that has a winning road record SU.
  • Head-to-head in the NFC matchup, the favorite on the closing NFL betting line has covered ATS in the last four meetings. The total in this series has gone OVER the closing line in four of the last five games between these two conference foes.

Eagles at Panthers Verdict

The Eagles are flying high following that dominating win last week, while Newton and the Panthers appear to have regained the form that led to so much success two seasons ago. I think both quarterbacks will continue to light things up in prime time Thursday to help take this game OVER the current 45-point total line on SBR NFL Odds.
