The Battle of East Rutherford resumes Saturday night when the New York Jets “host” the New York Giants in preseason action. The football odds say the Giants will prevail.

Bob McAdoo is winless as an NFL head coach. That won't be too worrying for New York Giants supporters – we're talking about a pair of preseason games here. Nonetheless, McAdoo is 0-2 SU and ATS thus far. Neither game was close, and the Giants have another one coming up Saturday night against their roommates, the New York Jets. This could get ugly, folks.

Yet the Giants are 2.5-point “road” favorites on our NFL odds board as we go to press, up from –1 at the open. And the early consensus reports show 60 percent of bettors pounding the G-Men. If that weren't enough, Big Blue is getting unanimous support at –135 on the moneyline after opening at –128. Is there something going on we should know about?

New York Minute
Well, it's not like we can put too much stock in the preseason records for either of Saturday's head coaches:

Bob McAdoo, Giants: 0-2 ATS, OVER 1-1
Todd Bowles, Jets: 4-2 ATS, OVER 3-3

Jets fans have to be pleased with the work Bowles has done since taking over from Rex Ryan last year. Even so, this is a very small sample size of preseason games. It gives us a little more confidence putting Gang Green in our NFL picks, but only a little. We can pretty much write off any plays on that 42.5-point total while we're at it. The weather report for Saturday night looks fantastic, by the way: clear skies, 80 degrees at kick-off.

Harvard Strong
Maybe the Jets are getting the short end of the stick because we're about to see a lot more of their starting quarterback. To the depth charts~!

Giants: Eli Manning, Ryan Nassib, Logan Thomas
Jets: Ryan Fitzpatrick, Geno Smith, Bryce Petty, Christian Hackenberg

If you've been reading this space for a while, you know how much we like Fitzpatrick here at the ranch. No, he's not an elite quarterback, but the betting market doesn't give him nearly the credit he deserves – part of the reason the Jets went 8-6-2 ATS last year. Is it because he went to Harvard? Is it the beard? Whatevs; Fitzpatrick ranked No. 14 at his position in DVOA (Defense-adjusted Value Over Average) last year, according to Football Outsiders. Manning was No. 19 among quarterbacks. Just sayin'.

This is Week 3 of the preseason, so we can expect Fitzy to get his reps on Saturday, especially after he spent most of the offseason in a contract dispute. Maybe he'll come out a little wobbly as a result. The plan is for the Jets starting unit to play into the second half; no word yet on how many snaps Manning will get, but both he and Nassib have been limited thus far by the Giants offensive line, which looks like it's going to be a problem again this year. Always bring protection, kids.
