We sift through the opening NFL odds board for week 17 & compare those to last week’s Advanced Lines from Westgate LV SuperBook. How have last week's results impacted the bottom line?

Ravens vs. Bengals
Advanced Line (12/22): CIN -10
Opening Line (12/27): NO LINE

The Ravens are after one of the biggest upsets of the season, a shocking week 16 victory over the Steelers – a side that many NFL betting experts touted as potential dangerous floaters in the playoffs. Now, the Steelers might not even make the playoffs thanks to the 20-17 loss in Baltimore. The NFL odds for this game are off the board as the Bengals are yet to play their MNF clash with the Denver Broncos. If the Bengals win convincingly, they’re sure to reopen as the significant faves in this game. Let’s face it, a win by the going-nowhere Ravens isn’t going to change much, particularly when the Bengals are looking at a regular season curtain-closer at home.

Lions vs. Bears
Advanced Line (12/22): CHI -1.5
Opening Line (12/27): PK

Both the Lions and Bears are coming off wins in week 16 NFL betting. The Lions destroyed the Niners 32-17 on the road while the Bears edged the Buccaneers 26-21. Advanced betting lines had the Bears slightly favored at home, but following the convincing accounts of each side in week 16 odds makers have gone to press with a PK line. Early betting at some sportsbooks has pushed the Bears back up to 1-point home favourites, despite their 1-6 SU record at home.

Jaguars vs. Texans
Advanced Line (12/22): NO LINE
Opening Line (12/27): NO LINE

The Houston Texans advanced their bid for a playoff spot with a convincing 34-6 win over the Tennessee Titans in week 16. Last week, odds makers held this game off the board due to the quarterback question marks – would Hoyer be fit for the game or would the Texans have to rely on third-string quarterback Brandon Weeden. Tale told it was the third-stringer that got the start. The NFL line continues to be off the board as the same quarterback dilemma moves front and centre: do the Texans go back to Hoyer if he’s fit this week or stay with Weeden.

Patriots vs. Dolphins
Advanced Line (12/22): NE -3.5
Opening Line (12/27): NO LINE

The New England Patriots are coming off an overtime loss to the NY Jets in week 16 NFL betting, a result that lifted the Jets into the playoff picture and saw them regain control over their postseason destiny. The Dolphins meanwhile succumbed to another hapless loss on the season behind interim Coach Dan Campbell. In all likelihood, he’ll now be replaced in the postseason. The state of affairs in Miami is dire, nowhere more so evinced than in the empty stands last week. The Patriots were matched as the 3.5-point road faves in Advanced Lines. Most sportsbooks have this game off the board because of the growing injury list for the Patriots. Still, some sportsbooks are showing NFL betting lines for this game and they’re almost triple last week’s. Patriots are matched as the 9-point road faves at BetOnline.

Saints vs. Falcons
Advanced Line (12/22): NO LINE
Opening Line (12/27): ATL -4

Last week, there were no NFL betting lines for the game as question marks surrounded Drew Brees’ fitness. He was doubtful to start against the Jaguars in week 16. He did and led the Saints to a 38-27 win, coming through as the home chalk for NFL bettors. The Falcons, however, masterminded the biggest upset of the season when they handed the Carolina Panthers their first loss of the year in a 20-13 victory at the Georgia Dome. It was the best game the Falcons played in a long time and extended their winning streak to two games. All of a sudden, odds makers are back on the Falcons wagon as they open as the 4-point home chalk against the Saints.

Jets vs. Bills
Advanced Line (12/22): BUF -1.5
Opening Line (12/27): NYJ -3

Of all the games on the NFL odds board, this one experiences one of the most noticeable fence jumps. Westgate’s Advanced Lines had the Bills favored at -1.5 points at home, and while they underscored such favoritism with a 16-6 win over the Cowboys in Buffalo last week it was hardly convincing. Certainly not on an equal footing to the Jets’ 26-20 win over the Patriots in OT that resurrected their playoff bid. It’s not without some irony that the Jets take on their former coach Rex Ryan and the Bills in week 17 with their postseason hanging in the balance.

Eagles vs. Giants
Advanced Line (12/22): NYG -2.5
Opening Line (12/27): NYG -3

The Eagles lost to the Redskins badly and the Giants were steamrolled by the Vikings in SNF. Neither team has looked convincing or enjoyed any viable consistency this season. Giants reopened this week as the favorites, up by half a point. In the absence of any good reason for either side to be favored by a field-goal, the only explanation is home-field advantage and the return of Odell Beckham Jr. to the line-up.

Steelers vs. Browns
Advanced Line (12/22): PIT -9.5
Opening Line (12/27): PIT -11

The Pittsburgh Steelers stubbed their toes in Baltimore, dropping down the ladder in the playoff hunt. Now, their destiny is really up in the air. Yet, they return to the NFL odds board as the whopping 11-point faves, up by almost a field goal since last week’s Advanced Line serving at Westgate. The Steelers were unstoppable over the last six weeks on the offensive side of the ball until they ran into their divisional foes Ravens. Elsewhere, the Browns held the Chiefs close in week 16, losing just 17-13 to cover as the hefty double-digit road underdogs.

Titans vs. Colts
Advanced Line (12/22): IND -3
Opening Line (12/27): NO LINE

Most sportsbooks have this game off the NFL odds board this week as Matt Hasselbeck limped off the field in week 16 with his fourth injury in as many games. The question marks around Andrew Luck continue and it remains to be seen whether he’ll start in week 17. As yet, he’s not been cleared. What’s more, the Colts could be eliminated on the heels of MNF, which then would probably mean the end of the season for Andrew Luck. There’s no reason for the organisation to risk their franchise quarterback if the game is meaningless. This is a game that most NFL bettors will wait on until the battle lines are drawn.

Redskins vs. Cowboys
Advanced Line (12/22): PK
Opening Line (12/27): DAL -3

If there’s one game that makes no sense on the NFL odds board it has to be this one. Why would the Cowboys be favored by a field goal when they are riding a three-game losing streak and have lost 11 of their last 13 games. Did odds makers miss the part when the Redskins won the NFC East on Saturday?

Raiders vs. Chiefs
Advanced Line (12/22): KC -7
Opening Line (12/27): KC -6.5

The Kansas City Chiefs failed to cover as the double-digit favorites over the Browns in week 16, but they got the win and clinched a playoff spot nevertheless. The Raiders, meanwhile, are coming off a 23-20 win over the San Diego Chargers on TNF. The NFL betting line has come down by half-a-point on the NFL odds board at early doors but some sportsbooks are sporting a 7-point line. All in all, there’s really no change in the NFL betting outlook on this game.

Chargers vs. Broncos
Advanced Line (12/22): DEN -9.5
Opening Line (12/27): DEN -7.5

Although the Denver Broncos are yet to play their MNF game with the Bengals, the odds makers went to press with opening NFL odds on this game. It’s worth noting that the Broncos have lost two-points on the NFL odds board without even taking the field in week 16. That’s down to the concentrated effort by the Chargers in week 16, covering as the 5-point road underdogs to the Raiders. Philip Rivers and the Chargers are not going down quietly, finding some pride down the stretch. It’s their second AFC West showdown in as many weeks and it’s now looking like it might be closer than Advanced Lines predicted it would be.

Seahawks vs. Cardinals
Advanced Line (12/22): SEA -2.5
Opening Line (12/27): ARI -3.5

In the second fence jump of the week, the Seahawks fall out of favor considerably. Last week, Westgate LV Superbook had the Seahawks favored as the 2.5-point road team. But a shocking loss to the St. Louis Rams at CenturyLink in week 16 changed everything. Prior to that the Seahawks had been on a tear in the league and predictably all and sundry were buying what they were selling. It didn’t help their cause either that the Cardinals deposited a comprehensive beat down of the Packers at the same time on Sunday, a 38-8 walloping that serves as a gauntlet throwing win to the rest of the NFC.

Rams vs. Niners
Advanced Line (12/22): SF -2.5
Opening Line (12/27): SF +3.5

The third and final fence jump of the week on the NFL odds board features in the NFC West showdown between the Rams and Niners. Two sides headed in opposite directions in recent weeks. The Rams are riding a three-game winning streak, underscored by a road win over the Seahawks that marks a series sweep over their lofty NFC West rivals. The Niners are sliding behind a three-game losing streak and showing no gumption down the stretch. Not surprisingly, the odds makers have jumped on the Rams’ wagon. We’d wager so too will NFL bettors.

Bucs vs. Panthers
Advanced Line (12/22): CAR -10
Opening Line (12/27): CAR -12

Although the Panthers lost their first game of the season and slipped to a 14-1 SU record, they reopened as the considerable home favorites. Heck, even up by two points from Advanced Lines at Westgate last week. Early NFL betting, however, has brought this line back down to the 10.5-point mark at most sportsbooks.

Vikings vs. Packers
Advanced Line (12/22): GB -5.5
Opening Line (12/27): GB -3

Following a sever beat down in Arizona, the Green Bay Packers return to Lambeau field with some of the shine coming off them on the NFL odds board. Down from -5.5 in Advanced Line servings, the Packers are now trading in field-goal range over the Vikings in a game that holds significant playoff implications for the pair. The Vikings punched their ticket to the postseason with a convincing 49-17 win over the Odell-Beckham-less Giants in week 16, which has some thinking they could prove the savvy NFL pick on the road in this highly anticipated NFC North showdown that is slated to bring down the curtain on the regular season with an all mighty thud.
