Two strong defenses and a chance of rain make the UNDER the sharp NFL pick for Sunday night's game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Carolina Panthers.

Jason's 2015 record as of Oct. 23: 22-15 ATS; 0-1 ML (-1.00 units); 14-24 Total

Philadelphia, don't fail me now. Betting on the Eagles (3-3 SU and ATS) has had its ups and downs, but at least the UNDER has been a solid NFL pick at 5-1 through Week 6. We've got another chance to ride the Eagles this Sunday night (8:30 pm. ET, NBC) when they visit the Carolina Panthers – expect the Panthers have the OVER at 3-1-1. Marvelous.

No need for despair. For the most part, the Panthers have been beating up on some very weak defenses. That won't be the case against Philadelphia. This should be another one of those classic “running and defense” situations, and there's even a 20-percent chance of rain in the forecast to give the UNDER an extra boost. As we go to press, nearly two-thirds of bettors are pounding UNDER 45.5, down from 46.5 points on our NFL odds board at the open.

You Are Not Evicting Time
Philly's value as an UNDER pick is fairly well established by now. The Eagles defense moves up four spots to No. 3 on the DVOA charts after last week's 27-7 win over the New York Giants (UNDER 50.5). The Giants were held to 247 total yards, and even a Philadelphia pick-six wasn't enough to threaten the total.

The Philadelphia Eagles offense made sure of that. Sam Bradford was picked off three times on deep throws; some of that's dumb luck, but some of that's on Sam. Despite that performance, Philly's offense rises two spots to No. 20 overall (No. 25 pass, No. 13 rush) this week. RB DeMarco Murray had another strong game for the Eagles with 112 yards and a TD on 21 carries against New York's otherwise solid rush defense. Go ahead, hand Murray the ball more. Watch that clock run down.

Kuechly Down UNDER
Really, we don't mind. The No. 5-ranked Carolina Panthers defense (No. 3 pass, No. 18 rush) might look a bit vulnerable in this aspect, but LB Luke Kuechly missed three games with a concussion. Then he came back last week and held Marshawn Lynch to 54 yards on 17 carries. Alas, that game still went OVER when Seattle's defense went belly-up in the fourth quarter.

Again, not a problem. The Eagles are better at defense than Seattle (No. 13 overall) this year, partly because they took away CB Byron Maxwell in free agency, and they don't have the same issues against tight ends like Greg Olsen, either. As for Carolina's No. 11-ranked offense (No. 22 pass, No. 4 rush), once again we've got a favorable run-heavy situation for our purposes, and the Panthers will be facing their toughest defense yet after dealing with the likes of Jacksonville and New Orleans. Take us to UNDER Town, and may the prolate spheroid be with you.
