The Panthers are hosting the Eagles in an awesome NFC showdown on Thursday Night Football this week, and Bovada has some nice props we can take advantage of to cash some winning tickets!
We usually think about the Panthers defense as solid, especially at home. This conventional wisdom isn’t wrong this season, it just doesn’t tell the whole story. A half-truth is usually a lie in this world, and the Panthers' strong defense is a half-truth.
With a banged-up secondary over the last few weeks, the Panthers have been giving up boatloads of yards to opposing receivers. Sure, a lot of it has to do with them playing with the lead finally over the last few games, but injuries have played a part as well. Carolina's two starting corners James Bradberry and Daryl Worley look like they will play after being banged up recently, but starting safety Kurt Coleman is still out as is backup strong safety Demetrious Cox.
This has caused some problems in the Panthers defense against opposing pass catchers. Quarterbacks have totaled 756 yards over their last three games, with 7 touchdowns and an average of just under 7 yards per attempt. These are not eye-popping bad numbers, but with a spread of -3 and a total of 45 in the NFL odds, you have to think the Panthers are legit favorites to play against with the lead for most of the game against Philadelphia.
Don’t get me wrong, the Eagles are a strong football team, but with a limited run game right now, they have relied on their passing game and sophomore quarterback Carson Wentz. This has helped guys like Jeffery, who is averaging 12.3 yards per catch. His yards per target have been pretty bad this season, but I think that has been more by the games the Eagles have been playing recently.
The Eagles have played with the lead a lot over their last two games and in their first one, but in their matchups against the Chiefs and Giants, they were forced to throw the ball more. Tonight against the Panthers’ banged-up secondary is one of those nights.Free NFL Pick: Over 57½Best Line Offered Both: Bovada
Jonathan Stewart O/U 50½ Rushing Yards
The one thing that has really saved the Eagles this season has been their rushing defense. Putting the offense aside for a second, their play against running backs has been the best asset of this team. The Eagles are holding their opponents to an average of 62.8 yards rushing per game this season, and that has been against guys like Kareem Hunt and Melvin Gordon.
Now the Eagles are up against Carolina's Stewart, a guy who is on the tail end of his career and is losing a few snaps to Christian McCaffrey. Bovada has Stewart’s total at 50½, and I think that is pretty high for a guy averaging just 3.3 yards per carry. Stewart has gotten the volume recently, rushing the ball 18 times last week. However, he only totaled 21 yards on those 18 carries, and he has looked bad against solid run defenses. Sure, he can run on the Patriots and Saints, but against the Eagles he is going nowhere.Free NFL Pick: Under 50½Click Here For An Eagles-Panthers Video Preview
