Dolphins vs. Giants NFL Picks : Enticing Total Odds Worth Grabbing As Two Former OCs Tango in NJ

Ben McAdoo NY Giants

The New York Giants are 3-point home faves on Friday's NFL odds board for their matchup with the Miami Dolphins. Two new head coaches have us looking at the total instead.

It's a new era for the New York Giants. Well, sort of. They've got a new head coach in Ben McAdoo; he was promoted from offensive co-ordinator after the G-Men got rid of Tom Coughlin. And there are some new players for 2016. New York shelled out on defense, adding DE Olivier Vernon, CB Janoris Jenkins and NT Damon Harrison to a team that finished No. 30 in defensive efficiency last year. Things are looking up.

In theory. McAdoo will make his NFL head coaching debut this Friday (7:00 p.m. ET) at the New Meadowlands versus the Miami Dolphins, who have a new coach of their own: Adam Gase, most recently the offensive co-ordinator for the Chicago Bears. At press time, the Giants are 3-point home faves on our NFL odds board with a total of 36.5. The very early consensus is 93 percent on Big Blue.

Sheer Quality
This would normally be the point where we lay out the career preseason ATS and total records for the two head coaches, but neither McAdoo nor Gase has any data to give us. Not ideal, but not a problem. Both coaches are offensive gurus, so we expect both the Giants and the Dolphins to come out firing Friday night. McAdoo got his NFL start back in 2004 as “offensive quality control co-ordinator” for the New Orleans Saints; Gase has been coaching offense since 2005, when he was an assistant with the Detroit Lions.

So let's move on to the QB depth charts for both teams, according to Rotoworld

Giants: Eli Manning, Ryan Nassib, Lance Thomas
Dolphins: Ryan Tannehill, Matt Moore, Brandon Doughty, Zac Dysert

Manning has been hot as a pistol in training camp, and the team around him is much healthier than it was last year. He's expecting to play a little bit on Friday; most of the heavy lifting will be done by Nassib, who put in some quality work for the G-Men each of the last two preseasons. Gase has yet to confirm who will start for the Dolphins, although it appears Tannehill will get at least some reps in, as he learns yet another new offensive scheme – his third in four years.

Miami also has Moore, a familiar face who started 12 games for the Fish back in 2011. But his preseason performance has been up-and-down over the years; Doughty is a rookie, and Dysert has gotten minimal work since turning pro in 2013. It's a decent situation for the Giants, playing at home in McAdoo's debut. But we're more interested in the total for our NFL picks. There's a 30-percent chance of a thunderstorm over East Rutherford at game time, so that doesn't help, but if the weather holds, having both McAdoo and Gase working on their stuff in Week 1 should be just what the doctor ordered.
