Week 1 is the books. How did game results perform against the market? Find out as we recap the entire slate of action and serve up the verdict.

Underdogs Rule Opening Week
Week 1 was overall dominated by underdogs going 11-5 ATS, marking a good day for sportsbooks (like Bodog) and not quite so good a day for the betting public according to Vegas reports, which claim the day served up one of their best regular-season profits ever. Overall favourites went 5-9 ATS while home favourites went 4-9 ATS. Conversely, home underdogs went 2-1 ATS while road underdogs went 9-4 ATS.

And we’re off...!

The week began with Seattle Seahawks (-5.0) covering handily on Thursday at the expense of Green Bay Packers when they won 36-16. After the defending champions however it was pandemonium as the underdogs stepped up huge on Sunday to deliver widespread upset, a trend that spilled forth even into one of Monday’s doubleheaders.

The NFL odds favourites covering were San Francisco (-5.5 at Dallas), Philadelphia (-10.5 at home to Jaguars), Houston (-2.5 at home to Washington) and Detroit Lions (-4.5 at home to Giants).

Philadelphia Eagles got off to a sluggish start, falling 17-0 to the Jaguars before a valiant second half saw Nick Foles and Company score a massive 34 points that rescued the game and avoided what would have been the week’s headline upset in both SU betting (had Jaguars actually pulled off the road win) and on the spread. After breezing to a 21-3 score in the first quarter, the San Francisco had the Cowboys by the scruffs of their necks and never let up. Houston Texans stifled the Washington Redskins at home 17-6 while the Lions manhandled the Giants 35-14.

The Home Underdogs
Atlanta Falcons (+2.5 at home to New Orleans Saints) and Miami Dolphins (+4.5 at home to New England Patriots) enjoyed high profile upsets in week 1. Falcons overcame the Saints in overtime to win 37-34 and narrowly cover. Miami Dolphins enjoyed a late-stage comeback against rivals New England Patriots, scoring 23 unanswered points to win the game 33-20; thereby, delivering one of the week’s biggest upsets both SU and ATS as the Dolphins cashed huge out as the home underdogs.

The Road Underdogs
Road underdogs went 9-4 ATS, including Buffalo Bills (+6.0) covering with a 23-20 win over Chicago Bears, Cincinnati Bengals (+1.5) covering while beating Baltimore Ravens 23-16, Minnesota Vikings (+3.0) covering all while crushing St. Louis Rams 34-6, Indianapolis Colts (+8.0) covering in a 31-24 defeat to the Denver Broncos, and Oakland Raiders (+5.5) covering while succumbing to a 19-14 defeat to New York Jets. Arguably, the biggest road upset was by Tennessee Titans, who not only romped to a 26-10 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs (-3.0) but also covered handily.

SU and Totals betting
Home teams went 10-6 SU with Detroit Lions winning by the biggest margin of points (21), followed by Seattle (20) and by Philadelphia with a 19-point margin. Other big home winners were Miami (13-point margin) and Houston (11-point margin).

Biggest home losers were St. Louis Rams (-28 margin of points) and Kansas City Chiefs (-16 margin of points), while Dallas followed with an negative 11-point margin. Finally, there was a 9-7 edge on the 'under' as NFL picks
