On the heels of Gronkowski’s announced retirement, we weigh in on the New England Patriot’s NFL futures and highlight some important takeaways to consider for your NFL picks in 2019.

The NFL is buzzing with the news of Rob Gronkowski’s retirement, announced less than 24 hours ago by the much-loved Patriots’ tight end himself on twitter.

Gronks departure is already giving way to speculation about his future prospects. His loving-the-centre-of-attention, life-of-the-party personality is such that it’s hard to imagine he would just slink out into civilian obscurity. Let’s face it, he often stole the show on the field.

So it is only natural that trend would continue off the field. You have to hand it to bookmakers, they don’t waste much time either, having rolled out a slew of NFL futures about where he might turn up next on tv.

For our part, we examine what impact – if any at all – his retirement will have on the New England Patriots’ NFL futures for the upcoming season. Heck, his departure is sure to have a spillover effect particularly impact the AFC East odds as well as the AFC Conference odds.

Evidently, divisional rivals are getting fired up about the prospect of a Gronk-less Patriots team in the upcoming season. They are the immediate beneficiaries of his absence from the lineup, so it’s hardly surprising they’d feel their chances against the Patriots would improve. John Harbaugh himself weighed in on the topic calling the star tight-end ‘a nightmare to try to defend.’ (Courtesy of NBC sports).

Then again, Bill Belichick and the Patriots’ organization are masters at getting the best out of any of their players. From the average to the starlet, the Patriots seem to always find a way to rise above challenges. Often over the last few seasons, Gronkowski was sidelined with injuries, yet the New England Patriots marched into AFC Conference final after AFC Conference final from season to season; into Super Bowl glory and all.

Elite players have come and gone from Boston’s famed organization before, but the team ethos is constant. No team is more disciplined or focused or regimented and that fact alone should really see the Patriots maintain their value on the NFL odds board with bettors even if the price fattens up. Indeed bookmakers may well fatten the odds just so in order to tempt bettors to bite.

There has been a slight shift since we last weighed in on the NFL market. New England Patriots have fattened ever so slightly – from +750 to +800, slipping into second place behind the now top favorites Kansas City Chiefs at +750 with BetOnline. Formerly favored Los Angeles Rams have slipped into four-digit money (+1000 at BetOnline) following the addition of Blake Bortles as their backup. New Orleans Saints, meanwhile, move up in the ranks, level with the Patriots as second faves at +800.

Obviously, the four aforementioned teams represent last season’s AFC and NFC finalists. It’s only fitting that they would reign supreme in NFL betting markets ahead of the 2019-2020 NFL regular season.

Bookmakers are still working out the latest serving of AFC Conference odds and AFC divisional odds, updating them following Gronks announcement. They’ll be updated soon. For now, the overarching NFL futures serving can shed some light.

AFC East rivals NY Jets, Miami Dolphins, and Buffalo Bills are longshot bets currently in Super Bowl LIV odds. Jets and Bills are priced at +5000 and +6600 respectively, while the Dolphins are propping up the board as the whopping +10000 bet with BetOnline.

What these NFL futures point to in no uncertain terms is the reality that this triplet is essentially in the same boat, rebuilding. As such, they are longshots in the overarching landscape of the league and, in turn, one must consider they’ll remain similarly so in the AFC East. In short, losing Gronk is a big loss to the Patriots but not enough of one to turn the tables on New England as far as the field of play In the AFC East is concerned.
