It’s almost time for the first Sunday of NFL football. I have my eye on in season long props is the total for DeVonta Freeman’s rushing yards at Bovada.

Three Straight 1000-Yard Seasons?

For the last two seasons, DeVonta Freeman has run all over the NFL. The former 4th-round pick out of Florida State ran for 1,061 yards in 2015 and 11 touchdowns, only to outdo himself in 2017, rushing for 1,079 yards, another 11 touchdowns, and all of this on 4.8 yards per carry.

When you do that, you get rewarded with a five-year extension that has an annual average value of being the highest paid running back in the league. It is severely frontloaded to protect the Falcons, but for Freeman, it should not affect his workload one but this season.

While the emergence of Tevin Coleman is a concern, there is not better back for the Falcons on first and second down than Freeman. He should continue to out-touch Coleman 2-to-1 on first and second down, and he will continue to be used sparingly on third down, but that probably won’t help us too much.

However, Freeman is the undisputed option at the goal line and likely in the red zone, and with all this considered, you’re not going to give a running back big money and not use him, especially if he has already been paid a lot of the guarantee.

The Falcons are going to run Freeman until his wheels fall off, and then cut him. I expect him to once again approach 250 carries this season, simply because that’s how the Falcons are built now. Freeman and Coleman were one of the best running back duos on the league last season, and Freeman’s workload is not going to decrease after that contract.

 The Sharp Pick

The only worry here is the Falcons’ schedule. Along with playing a tough division, the Falcon has a tough non-divisional schedule against the AFC East and the NFC North. However, against teams like the Bears, Lions, Dolphins and Jets, Freeman is going to eat. He might rack up half of his 900 yards in those four games alone.

Well, maybe not that much, but you get the picture. I am still bullish on Freeman, and I think he has the ability rack up his third straight 1000-yard season. Add the over to your season-long prop bets for the 2017 season.
