The first glorious AFC West shootout of the year could be upon us. Here are our Week 2 Chargers-Chiefs same-game parlay picks.

The Chargers and Chiefs were a recipe for instant classics in 2021. With another year under Justin Herbert’s belt, is he ready to challenge Patrick Mahomes for the crown in the AFC West?

Here are my same-game parlay picks for the Week 2 Thursday night matchup between the Chargers and Chiefs (odds via FanDuel Sportsbook; Pick confidence is based on a 1-to-5-star scale).

Same-Game Parlay Predictions for Chargers vs. Chiefs

Over 53.5 (-115) ★★★★

Mahomes. Herbert. A shootout in the AFC West. As football fans, we deserve the Over in this game, right? Can’t it sometimes be as simple as that?

Both editions of this matchup cleared 53.5 points in 2021, with the Chargers taking the first bout 30-24 and the Chiefs winning an overtime thriller 34-28. If you squint, it's possible to be skeptical about either offense heading into Thursday, with Keenan Allen ruled out for Los Angeles and Kansas City still adjusting to life without Tyreek Hill.

But Mahomes didn't struggle without Hill in Week 1 while cruising with five touchdown passes during a 44-21 win over Arizona. The Chiefs' offense seemed to improve with the ancillary pieces that were added. Meanwhile, Herbert guided his team to 24 points against an upgraded Raiders defense in Week 1, and the Chargers should reach that mark again during a faster-paced contest on Thursday.

Overtime is also a possibility in a game that should be competitive, which is exciting for Over bettors. DraftKings’ same-game parlay feature offers the total at 54.5, so we’re playing our parlay at FanDuel to keep scores like 30-24 or 31-23 in play for the Over.

Ekeler 50-plus rushing yards (-140) ★★★★

Austin Ekeler started off slow on the ground with just 36 yards in Week 1. He was still given 14 carries to Sony Michel’s seven and Joshua Kelley’s four, so the workload wasn’t the issue. The problem was his paltry 2.6 yards per carry.

The Chiefs' run defense looked inspired in Week 1, but it's easy to like the attainability of this soft alternate line for Ekeler in a likely high-scoring game. The Chargers' top rusher hit the 50-yard rushing plateau in 13 of his 16 games. He cleared the bar in each of the seven games when Ekeler received 14-plus carries.

Week 1 was an anomaly. Ekeler acknowledged on his Yahoo podcast this week that he needs to improve. The Over should hit here with just a standard output from him.

Kelce 80-plus receiving yards (-112) ★★★

Travis Kelce sailed past this receiving mark only eight times in 2021 including the playoffs, which equates to an admittedly underwhelming percentage. But with Hill now in Miami, Kelce is the undisputed top passing option all by his lonesome for the Chiefs in 2022.

He showed the world what that looked like in Week 1, hauling in eight receptions for 121 yards and a touchdown. Raiders tight end Darren Waller posted a solid line of four catches for 79 yards against the Chargers, showing that receiving-heavy tight ends can thrive against this version of the Los Angeles defense.

With Kansas City’s typical passing volume and Kelce’s integral role in the scheme, the veteran should be about as automatic as any pass-catcher in the NFL in 2022. Kelce should be in line for another huge outing on Thursday after being a target hog who averaged over 12 yards per reception in 2021.
