Betting on the underdogs was the way to go in Week 1 of a brand new season of football in the CFL. The big question is if that trend will continue into this week’s action.

While I did have Hamilton as a road underdog in the front-end of last week’s CFL parlay, I took the bait on the defending Grey Cup Champion Edmonton as a home favorite and paid the price. The following is this week’s top two CFL picks based on betting lines.

Ottawa RedBlacks vs. Montreal Alouettes
I thought that Ottawa would struggle out of the gate to score points against Edmonton on the road in Week 1, but that was hardly the case in a thrilling 45-37 overtime victory as a six-point underdog that easily went OVER the closing 55.5-point line. What really impressed me was the play of quarterback Trevor Harris. He entered the game in the third quarter for an injured Henry Burris and proceeded to complete 17-of-19 attempts for 292 yards and three touchdowns.

Montreal was able to get past Winnipeg 22-14 in its season opener as a two-point road underdog to reverse a losing trend that saw the Alouettes drop six of their last seven games in 2015 both SU and ATS. The question I have in this matchup is can quarterback Kevin Glenn have the same success through the air on Thursday night after torching the Blue Bombers for 332 passing yards while completing 30 of his 42 throws?

Betting Trends
The RedBlacks are 4-0 ATS in their last four road games and the total has gone OVER in seven of their last eight East Division games.

The Alouettes are 1-4 ATS in their last five games against a team with a SU winning record and the total has stayed UNDER in seven of their last nine home games.

Ottawa has a 4-0 edge ATS in the last four meetings and it is 3-1 SU. The total has gone OVER in the last two games.

Betting Prediction
The OVER on the total line is an attractive play, but I am going with the RedBlacks in a straight-up pick as my top play. Harris will get the start on Thursday night and I like his chances to keep lighting things up through the air and on the scoreboard.

British Columbia Lions vs. Hamilton Tiger-Cats
The Lions opened the new season as 2.5-point underdogs at home, but they were able to grind-out a 20-18 victory against West rival Calgary for the 1-0 start both SU and ATS. The difference was a 73-yard punt return for a score by Chris Rainey early in the fourth quarter. Jonathan Jennings got the start at quarterback and while he did throw for 248 yards, he only connected on 57 percent of his 42 attempts while failing to get BC into the end zone through the air.

Hamilton ran all over Toronto as a five-point road underdog in last Thursday’s 42-20 victory to spoil the Argonauts’ debut at BMO Field. The Tiger-Cats opened up a 18-6 lead at the half and Jeremiah Masoli went on to complete 27 of his 37 passing attempts for 318 yards and three touchdowns. Chad Owens and Andy Fantuz combined for 13 catches for 166 yards and two scores to help pace the rout.

Betting Trends
The Lions are 1-4-1 ATS in their last six games in the month of July and the total has gone OVER in six of their last eight Friday games.

The Tiger-Cats are 11-5 both SU and ATS in their last 16 games following a SU win and the total has stayed UNDER in eight of their last 11 July games.

Head-to-head in this matchup, the home team has won the last six games SU with a 3-3 split ATS. The total has stayed UNDER in nine of the last 13 meetings in Hamilton.

Betting Prediction
Give BC credit for getting past Calgary at home, but I do not see the Lions going on the road and keeping pace with Hamilton on the scoreboard. Lay the 5½ points and take the Tiger-Cats to cover.
