Cardinals and Cowboys will meet at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio on Thursday night in the 2017 Hall of Fame Game in a contest which has devolved into a scrimmage of sorts.

Odds Overview

The NFL is back before we know it, with the Arizona Cardinals facing the Dallas Cowboys in the 2017 NFL Hall of Fame Game on Thursday night from Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium and the NFL Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. Offshore sportsbooks currently either have the Cowboys as 1½- to 1- with 5Dimes posing the exhibition game as a Pick. The Total (Points) in this game is at 34½ to 35½ while on the Moneyline, YouWager and Heritage have opened Dallas at -125 with Arizona at +105 on the takeback.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, Terrell Davis, Kenny Easley, Jason Taylor, LaDainian Tomlinson, Morten Andersen and former grocery bagger Kurt Warner will all be inducted in the Pro Football Hall of Fame at the Enshrinement Ceremony on Aug. 5.

Arizona Cardinals

Cardinals' Head Coach Bruce Arians knows the potential dangers of the first Exhibition game of the NFL Preseason and on Tuesday, said no starters would participate through the team’s official website. Arians also said that his backup QB Drew Stanton would also miss the 2017 HoF contest, with Missouri-product Blaine Gabbert expected to play the 1st half with undrafted Rookie Trevor Knight (Texas A&M) slated to be behind Center for the 2nd Half. So, no Carson Palmer, David Johnson, John Brown or Larry Fitzgerald on Offense for Arizona (7-8-1 in 2016) in Canton on Thursday night although one day, WR and former Minnesota Vikings ballboy Fitzgerald will have a very special day in Canton all to himself. So guys like undrafted WRs Larry Clark (Colorado State-Pueblo) and Carlton Agudosi (Rutgers) should get some looks and maybe a shot to make a NFL Roster or Practice Squad although it will have to be with Gabbert and Knight throwing them the pigskin. So Arians is voting apathy and wisdom knowing this is basically a glorified scrimmage with uniforms, lights and TV coverage.

Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys  will see legendary owner Jerry Jones enshrined this weekend in Canton, but on the gridiron, Head Coach Jason Garrett may take the same approach as Arians and not play any starters here. When told of Arians’ proclamation, Dallas HC Garrett wouldn’t go so far to say he wouldn’t be playing his starters, but did say, "I will not make that declaration right now,'' after the Cowboys first practice in pads, inferring maybe that guys like QB Dak Prescott, RB Ezekiel Elliott and WR Dez Bryant won’t even sniff the Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium field on Thursday night? We’ll see. So, we can possibly expect backup QBs Kellen Moore, Luke McCown and Rookie Free Agent Cooper Rush (Central Michigan) to be behind Center for Dallas (13-3 SU in 2016). With backup Zac Dysert (Herniated Disc), the Cowboys recently signed McCown, so expect he, Moore, Rush, FB Rod Smith, RB Ronnie Hillman and WR Andy Jones to get their fair share of reps on Thursday.

Canton, Ohio Weather Forecast, HoF Gme Trends, Modern Day NFL Hall of Fame Game Mentality, Analysis

The TWC forecast for Canton on Thursday night is currently calling for Scattered Thunderstorms during the evening, a Low of 67° with Winds S 5 to 10 mph. Last season’s NFL Hall of fame Game had to be canceled due to field conditions, but, as you can see, overall scoring in the exhibition and marking point to the end of the NFL offseason has really diminished somewhat over the last decade, with Head Coaches knowing the risks of Injury and the significance of games that don’t count in the Regular Season standings. Exactly why last season’s game was shelved. Scoring in the Hall of Fame Game the L10 times (17, 30, 44, 23, 39, 47, 27, 26, 51, 37) the game has been played—it was cancelled in 2011 because of the Lockout—has averaged 34.1 ppg with 3 of the L4 going Under the posted Total, so these numbers (34½, 35, 35½) being posted by sportsbooks right now is spot on and has even created or first Middle opportunity (35) smack dab in the middle of the Summer. And away we go.

Expect minimum minutes from any Skill Position guys that really matter here and this is one of those rare games in which both Head Coaches as well as the Referees will care less about the Game Clock ticking down. The sooner this game ends, the better will be the mentality heading in, especially after last year’s cancellation and the precipitous forecast for Canton, making the Under the only look with either Side capable of winning, but not probably not making it a priority to do so and using that exhibition game-time to look at and evaluate young talent fighting for Roster spots.
