Detroit Lions appear to have a straightforward clash with the Chicago Bears on the NFL betting board. Will the Lions come through as the prohibitive road favourites or can the Bears defy the NFL odds? Find out as we preview this NFC North showdown in week 16 NFL betting.

Detroit Lions (10-4 SU, 3-3 SU away)
Detroit Lions moved to the top of the NFC North pile behind a hard fought win over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday night. They have the head-to-head edge over the Packers, which puts them into pole position for the divisional title. But with two road games to close the season, one of which is a date with the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau in week 17 NFL betting, nothing is assured yet.

In last week's win over the Vikings, the Lions came out of the gates with all the verve and panache of a slug. So out of sorts and slovenly were they that they quickly fell behind 14-0, and not before a late surge in the second quarter did they close the gap to just four points. The second half was a rather excruciating affair for the Lions et al and their fans alike. Although they scored two field goals to take the 16-14 lead, the Vikings had a shot to snatch the last gasp win on a field goal attempt, only for it to go awry as the Lions looked on nervously.

It goes without saying their upcoming divisional clash with the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field is a must-win game. A win over the struggling Bears would all but assure the Lions a playoff berth. Oddsmakers send the Lions into week 16 NFL betting as the whopping -315 road favourites and the 7-point favourites against the spread.

Chicago Bears (5-9 SU, 2-5 SU home)
Chicago Bears have gone from bad to worse in the last month. After a horrendous 55-14 loss to divisional rivals Green Bay in week 10 NFL betting, right off a bye week, the Bears bounced back with back-to-back wins over the Vikings and Bucs. Although both teams aren't exactly heavyweights, the wins were positive signs the Bears could bounce back from a hefty defeat. That put them in semi-good stead with NFL bettors as well ahead of their week 13 date with the Detroit Lions, despite being tipped as the 7-point road underdogs.

Indeed, NFL bettors were split down the middle with many leaning towards the Bears as the sharp NFL pick on Thanksgiving Thursday. Tale told, the Lions demolished the Bears 34-17, easily covering as the 7-point home chalk. From then onwards, the wheels seemingly came undone with the Bears stretching their losing streak to three in a row. They lost 41-28 to Dallas in their second straight Thursday Night Primetime Betting affair and 31-15 to the New Orleans Saints on Monday Night Primetime Football.

In their second meeting with the Detroit Lions in four weeks, the Bears are once again listed at the disadvantage despite playing at Soldier Field. With a 2-5 SU record, home field advantage is clearly a moot point against a quality team. In fact this season the Bears are 1-8 SU against quality teams; the only win coming at the expense of the Niners, albeit since they've slipped in NFL estimation recently you could say the Bears are winless against all quality opposition this season.

NFL Betting Verdict: Lions -7.0 over Bears
To all intents and purposes, the Lions have form with a 10-4 SU record on the season with a 3.1-point margin of victory and that makes them the smart NFL pick to win SU against the Chicago Bears at -315 NFL odds.

In most cases, a 7-point spread would be too many points to give the Lions on the road, especially as they are just 3-3 ATS away. However, with some help from the Bears and the poor play of Jay Cutler, who was intercepted three times in last week's loss to the Saints, the Lions could potentially cover even this hefty spread. Cutler appeared entirely out of sorts in Monday's clash with the Saints and completely disconnected afterwards, if not apathetic (dare we say) in his post-match press conference.

On the whole, the Bears are in disarray and the discontent in the locker room is glaringly obvious not only in the press but on the field. If the Bears continue on this disinterested vein of form, the Lions should have no trouble covering such a hefty spread. Take the Lions as the favourites across the board on your NFL picks.
