Swinger's 2014 NFL Record (0-0, +0 units)
*Picks are rated from 1 to 5 units*

Ah, my favorite time of the year. Thank the good lord summer is over and now I don’t have to worry about losing all that weight just to parade my wares clad in only the skimpiest of skimpies. Hell, I’ve got three kids and a wife who loathes me…I mean loves me…so I’ve already reached my endgame. But now I can actually emerge from my house and conceal all the vestiges of too much rich food and far too many cocktails covered with layers upon layers of clothing. The crisp autumn air is already upon us and that means the NFL has arrived.

Each and every week, sometime around Thursday, this column as well as my video with the inestimable Peter “Super Freak” Loshak will appear. I will do my level best to post a thread in the Player’s Talk forum linking this column in order that my adoring, or not so adoring, fans can talk back. So without further ado, let’s get to my free NFL picks for Week 1.

Cincinnati Bengals vs. Baltimore Ravens (-2 ATS, -130 Money Line)
I didn’t like the Ravens six weeks ago when I predicted a  7-9 season and selected the 8 ½ (O-140) as a soft target in NFL betting futures to go low. But now here we are and a bevy of injuries later as Baltimore gets designated as the home favorite by offshore books like Pinnacle.com.

Ravens cornerbacks are all beaten up and Ladarius Webb spent virtually the entire summer on the sidelines with a back injury. We don’t have to tell you that Ray Rice will be in civvies due to his two-game suspension and his backup, Bernard Pierce, is returning after sustaining a mild concussion. Joe Flacco is not the ‘climb on my back and I’ll take you to the Promised Land’ sort of guy and 35-year-old receiver Steve Smith has seen better days after a stellar career in Carolina.

The Ravens defeated the Bengals last season when they played at M&T Bank Stadium (yet another charismatic stadium name) 20-17 in overtime but then dropped a 34-17 decision at Bengaldom in Week 16. Last season the Ravens ranked 18th in passing yards while the Bengals clocked in at 5th in passing defense. The tables are turned and the landscape has shifted in the AFC North. The Cats are the team that will win this division and they will kick it off with an outright victory over Baltimore on Sunday.

Free NFL Pick: Play the Bengals +2 for 3 units at Pinnacle com.

Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Philadelphia Eagles (-11, -510 Money Line)
I spied a very early line on this game where the Eagles were 9 ½ -point home favorites in NFL odds but that line is long gone and hard to find.  Now I realize fading the Jags last year was a recipe for success as they went 5-11 against the all-important number which was capped off by a 30-10 drubbing at the hands of the Indianapolis Colts. It’s more than likely perilous territory to bet against them in Week 1 because the fickle gambling gods can make you pay for such insolence!

However, let’s get real. The Eagles head coach Chip Kelly likes to motor his offense up and down the field with little or no concern of showing a team up. The Jax defense was 26th against the pass and 29th against the run last season which is about where they will end up at the end of this regular season. On the flipside, the Eagles offense was ranked as the number one rushing offense with the 9th rated passing offense. Look for a blood bath here at Lincoln Financial Field.

Free NFL Pick: Play the Eagles -10 (buying ½ point -120) for 4 units at Pinnacle, which is about the best line currently being dealt on this game.
