Denver Broncos -130, (-2.0 -115)
Analysis: The Denver Broncos enter the Super Bowl betting markets as the firm favourites at -130 NFL odds to win straight up. They are also currently the 2-point favourites on the spread or thereabouts across sportsbooks.
Denver (13-3, 7-1 home) have enjoyed a stellar season, largely down to the heroics of Peyton Manning and posting ridiculous stats (5,477 yards, 55 TDs, 10 INTs). Of course, the Broncos aren’t just about Manning, who’s largely a pocket player. He has endless options with wide receivers, Wes Welker and Eric Decker striking very attractive poses. What’s more, his team boasts a very capable rushing offense with great options in running backs Knowshon Moreno and Montee Ball.
In the playoffs, they took on divisional rivals San Diego Chargers, making light work of them in 24-17 victory. And then they underscored their top seeding with a solid victory over Tom Brady and his New England Patriots in the AFC Championship game last weekend, dangerous floaters that were deemed capable of the upset by many experts and pundits alike.
Seattle Seahawks +110, (+2.0, -105)
Russell Wilson is flourishing in the postseason, belying his lack of experience at this stage. Leading the Seattle Seahawks to a convincing victory over Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints in the divisional round, he followed it up with an incredible comeback from behind win over the San Francisco 49ers, last year’s Super Bowl runners-up. What’s more, Seattle Seahawks have paid dividends as the NFL betting favourites through the rounds.
In the Super Bowl extravaganza however the Seahawks (13-3, 6-2 away) are listed at the disadvantage, nominally so at +110 to win straight up. They are also currently tipped as the 2-point underdogs on the spread. Largely down to Seattle’s top ranked defense that gave up just 14.4 points and 273.6 yards per game, the NFL betting market on this highly anticipated affair is tight.
Underscoring this formidable defense is corner back Richard Sherman, who proved to be the game changer in their 23-17 win over the 49ers game, deflecting Kaepernick’s final Hail Mary throw into the end zone, in the dying second’s of the game, to prevent what could have been a touchdown for 49ers and, in turn, disaster to Seattle’s Super Bowl aspirations.
NFL Betting Verdict: This is the cream of the NFL crop and it’s proving to be one of the most difficult Super Bowls to predict, a fact exacerbated further by the fluctuating NFL odds and the divided NFL betting public. Moreover, these ridiculous fluctuations are sure to continue until kick off, wrecking more havoc with NFL picks surely.
What we do know however is that Broncos boast a complete offense with comprehensive options at every point for Manning to target and that makes them look rather invincible, even to an exemplary defense such as Seattle boasts. Interesting to note as well is the fact that the Broncos’ defense have stepped up their game in the postseason and nowhere more so than in the Conference finals when they held the Patriots’ running backs to under 60 yards. They were always good this season make no mistake. But they are playing even better now, and that just adds to the Broncos might as a whole. So if the Broncos’ defense steps it up against the inexperienced Russell Wilson and Co., Manning should have all the time in the world to pass his way to victory. And to do so in a big way!
