We’re going to take a look at Saturday’s NFL preseason clash between San Francisco and Denver. Come read this insightful NFL betting preview & total pick.
Dress Rehearsal Week
It’s the next to last preseason game this week for all 32 NFL teams. This is typically what’s referred to as dress rehearsal week. In the majority of instances, head coaches choose to play their projected starters for an extensive period of time at this exact juncture, and use the game for a final tune up prior to regular season action. Subsequently, final preseason games are notoriously utilized for final evaluation of players who reside on the proverbial bubble & keeping key personnel out of harm’s way.
49ers visit “The Mile High City” for Saturday Preseason Tilt
In this NFL betting preview article, I’m going to look at Saturday’s NFL preseason contest between San Francisco and Denver. The opening kickoff in Denver is slated for 9:00 PM ET. According to NFL betting odds Denver is a 5.0 point favorite, and the posted total is 42.5. Both teams enter this week with a preseason record of 1-1.
Starting and Backup Quarterbacks
San Francisco starting quarterback Colin Kapernick has seen limited action in the first two games of the preseason. During his brief appearances, he’s completed 2-of-5 passes for 27 yards. I fully expect Kapernick to play into the third quarter of Saturday’s game. The projected backup for San Francisco is Blaine Gabbert. The former first round pick of Jacksonville has seen the most action of any 49ers quarterback. He’s completed 14-of-17 of his passes for 107 yards. Although his completion rate of 82.4% is extremely impressive, his average of 6.3 yards per pass attempt leaves a lot to be desired.
Denver head coach Gary Kubiak opted to sit out Peyton Manning in the Broncos preseason opener. Manning did play last week at Houston, and was 8-of-14 for 52 yards passing. At the very least, Manning is expected to play the entire first half on Saturday. Denver’s backup quarterback barring any injuries will unquestionably be Brock Osweiler. The 6’8 gunslinger has seen plenty of action during Denver’s first two preseason games. Osweiler has been pretty impressive in those outings by going 15-of-20 (75%) for 272 yards passing. Speaking of Gary Kubiak, he’s gone 21-9 (70%) over the total in preseason games during his NFL head coaching career with Denver (2015) and Houston (2006-2012).
NFL Preseason Totals Betting Angle
- San Francisco is coming off a 23-6 win against Dallas in their previous game.
- Denver defeated Houston 14-10 last week.
Any team (49ers) playing in the preseason with a total of 37.5 or more, coming off a win by 10 points or more, versus an opponent that scored 14 points or less in their previous game, resulted in those contests going 16-4 (80%) over the total since 2006.
