The Philadelphia Eagles opened at +6 on the NFL odds board for Super Bowl LII, but they’ve already moved to +4.5 against the defending champion New England Patriots.

Super Bowl LII: Eagles vs. Patriots

And the beat goes on. When we last checked in on the Philadelphia Eagles, they were 5-point underdogs for Super Bowl LII against New England, down from +6 when the first lines hit the NFL odds board. The early action continues to pour in on Philadelphia; at press time, they’re 4.5-point puppies against the defending champion Patriots. Our expanded consensus reports show the Eagles pulling in 53 percent of bettors, up from 47 percent last week. The underdogs have also drawn 89 percent of the amount wagered, down from 93 percent.

So when does the betting public come in and pound the Patriots (15-3 SU, 12-6 ATS)? They say that 98 percent of the Super Bowl handle comes the weekend of the Big Game, which kicks off Sunday at 6:30 p.m. ET on NBC. There have been some ridiculously large bets on the Eagles (15-3 SU, 12-6 ATS) out on the Las Vegas Strip; in theory, a ridiculously large majority of casual bettors will come in on New England this weekend and balance out the books. In theory.

Here’s another theory: There are fewer Patriots fans out there in the marketplace than in years past. TV ratings were down 13 percent during the regular season, according to MoffettNathanson, and they’re down 12-20 percent for the playoffs. Nielsen’s regular-season numbers are a little less bleak, showing a drop of 9.7 percent from last year. There are many reasons for this downturn, but the National Anthem protests are the most visible – and most likely to turn off the red-state fans who lined up behind Donald Trump to support the Patriots.

It’s enough of a concern that we can’t automatically assume there’s going to be a deluge of money on New England this weekend. Which means +4.5 might be the best price you’ll get on Philadelphia. Having said that, there isn’t a gigantic gulf between +6 and +4.5; according to Wizard of Odds, that move is worth about 22 cents in vigorish, or about the same as moving from +3 to +2.5. Meaningful, but not gigantic.

The Carson Show

If you weren’t one of the early buyers on the Eagles, we’ve got another option for you, and it’s on the Super Bowl props market at Bovada:

“How many times will Carson Wentz be mentioned during broadcast?”

The total for this prop is 3.5, with OVER priced at –175, and we’re recommending the OVER for your NFL picks. No matter what happens with Eagles QB Nick Foles, his performance will be compared to that of Wentz, who made the Pro Bowl this year and generated some buzz as an MVP candidate before tearing up his knee. They might say “Wentz” 10 times before the second half. Book it, and check in with us again over the weekend for one last look at the Big Game.

Free NFL Pick: OVER 3.5 (–175) on “Wentz”Best Line Offered: Bovada
