Houston Texans look to make it 2-0 this weekend when they descend on the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. If the odds were any indication, Texans are favored to do just that at the expense of the Raiders as the home underdogs. Here’s a primer complete with our select NFL picks.

Houston Texans (1-0, 0-0 away)
Houston Texans are coming off a big win at home over the Washington Redskins in week 1 NFL betting. Defense held RGIII to no touchdowns in a 17-6 victory as Texans cashed in laying the points as the 2.5-point favourites. Holding a quality quarterback of RGIII’s ilk to such an abysmal performance and keeping the Redskins out of the end zone, despite tallying 372 yards in total offense (241 passing and 131 rushing) has to send Texans into their next game brimming with confidence. Indeed, they only allowed three third down conversions. J.J. Watt had a monster game with a sack, two tackles for loss and five QB hits.

Whoever lines up against them, defense has to feel ready for the task. On the offensive side of the ball, veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick went 29-of-37 for 267 yards and threw a touchdown pass. Jadeveon Clowney, top rookie draft pick, left the game with a torn meniscus, marking the one blight on an otherwise great start to the season.

Oakland Raiders (0-1, 0-0 home)
Oakland Raiders opened their season on a defeat to the New York Jets last week, a rather disappointing performance all around. The Raiders waffled up and down the field, mustering up only 158 yards in total offense (133 yards passing and 25 yards of half-hearted rushing) and defense was disappointing as they allowed the Jets to get away with 402 total yards (of which 212 yards were in rushing and 190 yards were in passing). On the bright side, rookie quarterback Derek Carr completed 20-of-32 passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns and defense forced two turnovers and only allowed two touchdowns.

Texans vs. Raiders Tips and Picks:

NFL Betting Line:
Houston Texans: -150, -3.0 +105 O/U 40.0
Oakland Raiders: +130, +3.0 -125 O/U 40.0
Game Time: 4:25 PM EST, Sunday, September 14

The Raiders have home field advantage, though all the good it does for them on the NFL odds as they are matched as the underdogs both to win straight up at +130 and cover as the 3-point underdogs. They are 7-7-1 ATS as the underdog since 2013, but 1-3-0 as the home underdog. What’s more, they are 0-4 ATS and SU in their last four home games and they are relying (most likely) on a rookie quarterback to lead them against a formidable defense. Against the Jets, Carr was so-so with an 89.1% passer rating under pressure and 77.1% passer rating when blitzed. He could be in for an even more difficult day with J.J. Watt at his heels constantly.

Consider the Houston Texans enjoyed the dubious honour of having the worst record last season in the league, going just 2-14 SU, still they are 3-5 ATS as the away team since 2013. However, they are just 1-6 ATS as the favourite since 2013 and 0-2 ATS as the away favourite, although those numbers are severely skewed by their 2013 season overall.

Bettors looking to back Texans as the 3-point favourites on the road have to be encouraged by their positive start on the season, especially against a Washington side that many felt would be competitive this season. Without getting prematurely excited about Week 1, there’s room for optimism for the Texans over a suspect Raiders. If J.J. Watt and the defense have a solid turnout they’ll be confident against rookie QB Derek Carr or, even, their former centre Matt Schaub (should he get the start). Whichever centre starts, Texans have the edge to both win straight up and cover for our NFL picks.
