Tonight’s NFL odds have the Bucs as -2 favorites vs. Dolphins, with a total of 37 ½. There could be some nice value in this battle of Florida, and depending on the playing time, the game might be pretty competitive.

Limited View
Both Miami & Tampa Bay lost, and only scored 10 points against their opponent in Week 1 of the preseason, however now against one another, it seems as if the offense might improve some. Ryan Tannehill and the Dolphins’ starters on offense barely got any time in Week 1, but this week they should get more than one series.

The Bucs’ offense however didn’t look that great in Week 1 of the preseason, and neither did their new defense under Lovie Smith. The Jaguars’ rookie, Blake Bortles played well against the second and third string players for the Bucs, and that will surely be improved upon this week for Lovie Smith’s team.

Both offenses will look to play better than last week, but with the starters likely getting limited time again this week, it’s hard to say that this will be a very high scoring game. Both defenses will play well, especially Tampa’s which should be very good this season.

Defense First
Even though they wont be in the game for very long, the Tamp defense may be one of the most undervalued units in the entire NFL. They have two All Pros returning and one of the best defensive coaches in the game coming in this offseason. On top of that, free agent signings like Michael Johnson from the Bengals, Alterraun Verner from the Titans, and Clinton McDonald from the Seahawks.

The Dolphins’ looked good with their first string in the game briefly last week, however against the starters for the Bucs, it’s going to be hard to replicate that. Even with an already very low NFL odds total of 37 ½ points, this could be a game where one or both teams fail to score into double figures. It’s projected to be the lowest scoring game of Week 2 of the preseason, and I am going to try and cash in on that with a wager on the under.

The Sharp Pick
After Tannehill leaves the game for the Dolphins, likely somewhere in the 2nd quarter, the Dolphins aren’t going to be able to move the ball very easily. On the other side, the combination of Josh McCown and second year player, Mike Glennon isn’t going to get much done on offense either. The Dolphins were plagued by inconsistent play on the defensive end last season, and you can bet that this preseason they are going to do anything they can to fix that.

With the amount of defensive talent and depth on both sides, it looks as if the total may be a safe NFL pick this weekend. I don’t expect much from the starters of either team, let alone the backups. Look for a game where neither team gets out of the teens in scoring.
