The Jets and Redskins each scored 17 points in their preseason opener but saw different results. Our Handicapper provides his pick as these two teams face off Friday night.

Jets What To Watch For
Really the main thing to watch for on the Jets, a team that's set at nearly every starting position, would be at quarterback. Of course, Ryan Fitzpatrick will be the starter after coming off a career-best season. But most NFL teams don't keep four quarterbacks. What will the Jets do with Geno Smith, Bryce Petty, and Christian Hackenberg?

There were no concrete answers from New York's 17-13 home win over Jacksonville last Thursday. As expected, Fitzpatrick didn't play much and was 3-for-4 for 72 yards. Smith was 8-for-14 for 79 yards and a touchdown, while Petty was 7-for-14 for 93 yards. Hackenberg didn't take a snap and most Jets beat writers don't expect him to play until the final preseason game. That's because he's guaranteed a roster spot as a second-round pick this year out of Penn State. Hackenberg is basically on a redshirt season.

Coach Todd Bowles says there's no competition right now for the backup job and that it's Smith's. But would the team just cut bait on Petty after taking the former Baylor star in the fourth round last year? You can try and get him through waivers and hope to stash him on the practice squad, but I'd imagine someone would sign Petty considering how good he was in college.  The last time a team opened the season with four quarterbacks on the 53-man roster was 2013 when the Redskins and Vikings both did.

If you are wondering how long Fitzpatrick might  play in this game, he played six series and into the middle of the second quarter in the second preseason game last year.

The Jets made a move this week, putting running back Bernard Pierce on injured reserve. To replace him the club signed veteran Antone Smith. He may get a few carries on Friday because Matt Forte and Khiry Robinson are dealing with injuries and not expected to play again, but Smith is a long shot to make the team.

New York was a 3-point favorite on NFL odds with a total of 36 last week vs. the Jags so the Jets are 1-0 against the spread and 0-1 'over/under' this preseason.

Redskins What To Watch For
Washington has no quarterback depth chart concerns as Kirk Cousins is the starter, veteran Colt McCoy is the backup and Nate Sudfield, a rookie out of Indiana, is the No. 3. The Skins were in Atlanta last week and lost 23-17. Cousins played one series and was 5-for-5 for 39 yards. McCoy then was 7-for-11 for 53 yards and Sudfield 10-for-15 for 89 yards and a touchdown.

Coach Jay Gruden was displeased with a running game that netted just 79 yards on 24 carries. Presumed starter matt Jones had 1 yard on two carries. Rookie Keith Marshall, who supposedly has been great in camp, had a negative-1 yard on five carries in trying to win the backup job. And Chris Thompson, likely the third-down back this year, had 0 yards on one carry. I think the running game is going to be a problem area this season. The Redskins let Alfred Morris walk in free agency.

Washington played the Falcons without top tight end Jordan Reed due to a thumb injury as well as first-round rookie receiver Josh Doctson (Achilles). You  might see Reed on Friday but not Doctson, the former TCU star. He was hurt way back on May 25 so I would think Week 1 of the regular season is a concern at this point.

The Redskins were 3-point dogs last week on NFL picks (I took the Falcons here at SBR) with a total of 37 so they are 0-1 ATS and 1-0 O/U.

Series History
It's the ninth preseason meeting all-time. Washington has won the past two. The teams haven't played since 2010. The teams played Week 6 last year at MetLife Stadium outside New York City and the Jets won 34-20 -- the second-most points Washington allowed in the regular season. Fitzpatrick was 19-for-26 for 253 yards with two TDs and a pick. He also ran for a score. Chris Ivory, who left this past offseason in free agency for Jacksonville, rushed 20 times for 146 yards and a TD.  The Jets did have the advantage in coming off their bye week. Cousins wasn't sharp, going 25-for-43 for 196 yards, a TD, and two picks. His rating of 57.9 would be a season low as was his completion percentage.

I have a feeling the Redskins won't be flagged 14 times again like they were in Atlanta. Give the points, go 'under' the total. The favorite is 4-1-1 ATS in the past six meetings.
