As we head down the home stretch in the NFL season, it’s time to start taking a serious look at NFL futures. Week 14 is almost finished, which means we only have a few more regular season games to go. With the playoff picture starting to come in focus, let’s take a look to see if an AFC West team can win the Super Bowl.
Who’s In Contention?
The Kansas City Chiefs are on the edge of the AFC West race at 7-6. They have very little margin for error, and if they do make the playoffs, they cannot do so as a division winner. The San Diego Chargers openes at +4 on our NFL odds, and they have a very slight chance of winning the division at 8-5, but they must beat Denver this weekend in order to stay alive. San Diego would then have to win out and see Denver lose at Cincinnati to set up a possible clincher in week 17. Denver, at 10-3, is in control of the division and would still lead by one game with two to play even if it lost to the Chargers this weekend.
Can The Chiefs Win It All?
The Chiefs have not been eliminated, but they need a lot of things to go their way. They will host the San Diego Chargers on the final day of the regular season, and as long as they’re one game back of the Chargers entering that game, they can win second place in the division because they beat the Chargers earlier in the season in San Diego. However, even if the Chiefs were to get second place in the AFC West, they would have to be sure to beat out Pittsburgh and Baltimore, both 8-5 in the AFC right now.
Can The Chargers Win It All?
San Diego showed last year that it could get into the playoffs and be dangerous as a number six seed. The San Diego Chargers won one game on the road in the playoffs and pushed Denver in the divisional round. San Diego could get hot if it makes the playoffs, but making the playoffs will be the tough test. The problem for the Chargers is that they have a very tough schedule: home against Denver, at San Francisco, at Kansas City. Winning two out of three is a must for getting in the playoffs. The Chargers would not be likely to make it at 9-7. Even if they get a number six seed, though, they’d have to play at top-seeded New England (barring a Patriots collapse) in the divisional round. They’re not in good shape for the Super Bowl so keep this in mind before making your NFL pick.
Can The Broncos Win It All?
With their comfortable lead in the AFC West plus the recent slip-up by the Cincinnati Bengals against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Broncos have an excellent chance of getting a first-round bye. The problem is that they’re not likely to get the top seed in the AFC, which means they’d have to go through Foxborough to play New England in the AFC Championship Game. The Denver Broncos are likely to make the AFC title game, but hey’re not likely to win it. You should bet against the AFC West champion winning it all unless New England loses in one of the next few weeks.
