The Battle of the Beltway comes to Week 3 of the preseason, as the Redskins take the 30-minute drive up north to play their inter-state rival, the Ravens. The NFL Odds favor Baltimore at home at -3, with a total of 43 ½ points.

New offenses, same faces
While the guys that run the offenses are the same as last season, two new coaches are leading the offenses into battle this season in both Washington and Baltimore. Gary Kubiak comes over from Houston to run the Ravens offense, which has looked much better than last season already. The Ravens have been one of the bigger scorers this preseason both with and without their starters in the game, and if you look at last season, their starters could be in the game for a while on Saturday.

The Redskins are of course under completely new leadership, not just at offensive coordinator, but Jay Gruden has made mediocre quarterbacks look great at times, and Robert Griffin III is far from mediocre. Washington has also made strides this preseason going 2-0 SU so far, and according to coach Gruden, the starters will get most, if not all of the first half playing time in Baltimore this weekend.

For the Ravens, if the Skins are giving their starters that much time, you have to think they will match. With both teams trying out new offenses, there could be a lot more plays run for their offensive starters. Last season in Week 3 of the preseason, Joe Flacco and the Ravens’ starters played almost through the entire third quarter. That is a lot even for Week 3 of the preseason, but while installing a new offense, it ups the likelihood of the offensive starters playing more.

The Sharp Pick
Even though we’ll likely see plenty of passing between these two this weekend, the running game and the running defense of this game will decide the winner. The Ravens’ had plenty of offensive line problems last season, which led to them being one of the worst rushing teams in the NFL. This preseason, things have looked better, but against a somewhat stout Redskins rushing defense, it’s going to be interesting to see how the Ravens move the ball.

On the other side, getting the running game going in Washington will also be crucial to whoever wins this game. Baltimore rush defense is still good too, and if neither team is moving the ball well on the ground, both will pull out more passing plays.

If that’s the case, the over looks like a pretty good play. The NFL Odds are already undervaluing the total at 43 ½, which is already one of the lower totals for Week 3. The Ravens have already scored 60 points this preseason, while the Redskins aren’t far behind at 47 total points.

For this rivalry game, there should be some nice competition going on not only on the field, but in the stands as well. With both offenses trying to work out the kinks of a new system, and with the rushing defenses from both, this could be a pass-happy, and high scoring game. Take the over, and add it to your NFL Picks.
