Hoping to avoid a third consecutive defeat, the Huskies should be out for blood tonight against a solid Yale team. Who should we favor with our college basketball picks tonight?
In the eyes of the odds makers, the Huskies have a great chance to redeem themselves and get back on track with a big home win tonight.
Just look over the NCAA basketball odds for reference. As of now, UConn is favored by 8.5 points over a Yale team that's gone 7-2 to start the season. A total had yet to have been released by the top sportsbooks, so keep checking back with SBR's odds monitoring service in order to get the best lines and maximize the value out of your picks.
Everything was just peachy for the Huskies. They were sitting at 3-0, topping it off with a great double-digit win over Dayton. Things have gone downhill since, as UConn has dropped consecutive games to West Virginia and then Texas. The loss to the Longhorns was a punch to the gut, as a 3-pointer with two seconds left resulted in a heart-breaking loss for the Huskies.
As per usual, Ryan Boatright tried to carry the team on his shoulders, and he had another splendid all-around game. He finished with 24 points and seven rebounds. Daniel Hamilton chipped in with 13 points and seven boards, but no one else topped seven points for UConn, as defense ruled the day in the matchup with Texas.
One man can only do so much though, and the Huskies have learned the hard way. They're going to need someone besides Boatright and Hamilton to step up and help. Guys like Rodney Purvis, Amida Brimah and Sam Cassell Jr. could all be candidates to do so. Whatever the case, this UConn team is only going to get better and better as the season wears on, and it always helps to have a terrific player like Boatright to set the example.
The Bulldogs have been very busy to start the season. They've already played nine times, having racked up seven wins to go with only two losses. They lost to Quinnipiac in their opener and then to Providence in late November.
Yale last took the court Wednesday in a 67-60 victory over Bryant. They shot 46.0 percent overall, with four different players reaching double figures in scoring. Justin Sears and Javier Duren have been the most productive players for the Bulldogs thus far this season. Sears is averaging 15.1 PPG and 8.9 RPG, while Duren has been good for 14.9 PPG, 5.8 RPG and 4.1 APG - he's been one of the most complete players in the Ivy League so far, no one will deny that.
But, do the Bulldogs have the talent to keep up with a highly motivated UConn team on the road? They haven't exactly played the most difficult schedule yet, so the step-up in competition could be an eye-opener. We'll know early on in this battle with the Huskies if they're going to be up for the challenge or simply get steamrolled over.
NCAA Basketball Pick
We're inclined to agree with oddsmakers here. They're expecting a big bounce-back showing from the Huskies, and we believe they'll be worth backing with your NCAA basketball picks.
Boatright will easily be the best player on the floor and he should have another unstoppable game, with Yale likely to find it difficult to cope with the high-scoring guard. So while the Bulldogs have already played almost double the number of games the Huskies have, we think talent wins out over all else. The home-court advantage doesn't hurt either. UConn is battle-tested and should be able to grab a victory while also covering the sizable spread for backers.
