Seton Hall is in trouble & are 16-point underdogs in the NCAA Basketball odds for tonight's match against the Villanova Wildcats. The Pirates stumbled to four straight losses and seven in its past nine games.
The Seton Hall Pirates Can Win Because…
If there’s a good reason for picking Seton Hall to cover as NCAA Basketball odds underdog, it’s that Villanova is coming off a physical and draining game on Saturday against Butler in Indianapolis. The Wildcats have had to make a commute, spend Sunday resting, and then turn around for this game on Monday night. Villanova didn’t get a single point from point guard Ryan Arcidiacono, who went 0 for 6 from the field. The Wildcats placed only two players in double figures. They were fortunate that one of those players, Darrun Hilliard II, was unconscious, hitting 8 of 13 threes, including the winner in the final seconds. If Villanova doesn’t get more balanced production, though, it could be vulnerable to a Seton Hall team intent on stopping its losing streak. Villanova can’t count on Hillard or anyone to hit 8 of 13 threes (or anything close to that) on a nightly basis.
What should also be said is that Seton Hall had a chance on Saturday to play without Jaren Sina, the point guard who has left the team. In this game, the Pirates should be more fluid and coordinated at the offensive end of the floor. Unless Villanova plays its best game – and that’s not likely – Seton Hall should be able to cover against the Wildcats, which stand at 182nd in the country in rebounds per game with 34.4. The Pirates, if they can force a reasonable number of missed shots, can compete in this game on the glass.
The Villanova Wildcats Can Win Because…
The Wildcats have a good chance to cover because Seton Hall is in the midst of a tailspin. Losing seven of nine games represents a collapse at this point in the season. This is more than just a bad week or two. Seton Hall has been poor the past month. The Pirates are worse than roughly two-thirds of all 351 Division I teams in assists per game (ranked 234th) and field goal percentage (ranked 243rd). When you then realize that Seton Hall is missing point guard Jaren Sina, who recently left the team, the Pirates have a shorter bench, one that is going to have a hard time dealing with Villanova’s three-guard lineup of Arcidiacono, Hilliard, and Dylan Ennis, with Josh Hart coming off the bench. Seton Hall, without Sina, has a shorter bench, and that reduced roster now has to keep pace with Villanova for 40 minutes. It doesn’t seem as though that will end up well, especially since Villanova has won six straight games and 10 of its last 11.
In the final analysis, Seton Hall does not yet look ready without Sina & as such have not earned our NCAA Basketball pick. The Pirates are probably going to need a few more games to learn how to readjust their offense. Villanova will pounce on Seton Hall at home and win going away.
