Texas is likely staring at a double-digit point spread for the third time in as many games against West Virginia this season. The Longhorns have great success in the betting market in this matchup, however.

West Virginia vs. Texas

Texas bull rushed the Texas Tech Red Raiders in the second half last night, outscoring them by 15 points en route to a 61-52 victory. The Longhorns went off as 5-point pups. The victory marked Texas’ first victory against a Big 12 opponent outside of Frank Erwin Center all year. They’ll need a miracle to secure another against West Virginia.

The Longhorns tipped off double-digit dogs in both meetings this season. West Virginia needed its experience and depth to beat the young Shaka Smart team 74-72 in Austin in January. The Mountaineers went off as 11.5-point favorites in that one. Texas also covered a 16-point spread in a 77-62 defeat at WVU Coliseum in the follow up.

Often, the best way to beat a press team like West Virginia is to give it a little dose of its own medicine. Smart is the perfect counter to Huggins’ Press Virginia, despite his team not fully grasping the Havoc style this season. Although turning the ball over 16 times on average in the prior two meetings, the Longhorns also forced 13 per contest. Overall, Texas is 9-1 ATS in the last 10 meetings, including four straight since Smart arrived in Austin and Huggins adopted the press. Look for Texas to come up short, but remain within the betting margins. Take the points.
