Washington State will kick off its Pac-12 schedule with a trip to intrastate rival Washington where the Huskies will also be facing their first conference rival of the season. Let's analyze this matchup and review what the college basketball oddsmakers are dealing in this one.

Washington State vs. Washington

The Washington State Cougars (7-5 SU, 2-6 ATS) may have a winning record this season but they have been poison to those backing them in their college basketball picks. Of their eight lined games, the Cougars have failed to cover the point spread in six of them. Their last two performances have mirrored this frustrating trend with victories over Santa Clara (69-68) and Cal-State Sacramento (74-66) as 2 and 9 ½ point favorites respectively. Near misses in terms of covering the number but misses nonetheless.

Washington (7-5 SU, 4-7 ATS) will host their intrastate rivals as they look to continue their three-game winning streak which began after the Huskies dropped four straight. Their last performance resulted in a convincing 94-72 thrashing of Seattle in which Washington was installed as a pick'em on the road by the college basketball odds makers. It was hardly that close and the Huskies will look to maintain that pace and tempo when they meet the Cougars tonight.

If you're unfamiliar with these teams and are glancing at the identical records trying to figure out why the home team Huskies are such big favorites, allow me to submit to you a few key statistical categories and how they fare as the season closes in on the midway point.

  • Points Scored: Washington 86.3 PPG (15th) vs. Washington State 72.2 PPG (222nd)
  • Points Allowed: Washington 80.2 PPG (314th) vs. Washington State 73.4 PPG (218th)
  • Rebounds: Washington 39.9 RPG (50th) vs. Washington State 35.7 (231st)

The Sharp Side

As you can see the home team Huskies hold a considerable advantage in terms of scoring and rebounding yet the visiting Cougars have been far stingier on defense. This is more than just a conference rivalry as only a four-hour drive separates the schools and their last four meetings have been decided by an average of just a click over four points per game. In their last meeting back in March of last season the Huskies were installed as 12 ½ -point home chalk and won the game 99-91, which failed to cover the number. In 2015, when the teams met again in Seattle (home of the Washington Huskies) the Huskies were again being favored heavily as home favorites, only at a slightly reduced 11 ½ point spread. And again, the Cougars not only played them tough but won the game outright 80-77.

The heavily favored Huskies are 1-5 ATS in their last six games, 0-4 ATS against teams with a winning record (like Washington State), and if that wasn't enough the underdog has covered the number in the last four meetings between these two teams. Grab the points with the visiting pup here.
