Wake Forest was definitely supposed to be better than how they have started out the season at just 1-4.  Today they should find things going their way a little bit better on their home court taking on UNC Greensboro. Odds makers have made Wake Forest a natural home favorite, but will this game be closer than they anticipate?

Odds makers have come out making Wake Forest a -7 favorite in this matchup which makes sense considering they are at home and play in the bigger conference. Danny Manning’s team has not played up to expectations though going just 1-4 so far this season and this matchup actually might prove to be challenging. Wes Miller has done a nice job with this Greensboro team that won 25 games last year and has enough people back to make some noise in the Southern Conference. Wake Forest should come out and play much better basketball but for my NCAA pick I’m going to back Greensboro plus the points as they could possibly take this game to the wire.

Expectations are pretty high this year for Wake Forest as they brought back plenty of talent for a team that can really put up some points last year averaging 82.8 points per game. This season they are averaging just 73.6 points per game however.  What is also a bit troubling for this squad is that not only are they allowing 74.8 points per game, but opponents are also shooting 41.3% from distance against them. As well, they rank 235th in the country in opponent shooting efficiency and160th allowing opponents to shoot 43.5% from the floor. They should be able to win this game at home considering that Greensboro is not a great offensive team, but due to the fact that Wake Forest has not been shooting the ball particularly well I think there is value with the points. Having already lost to Drake, liberty, and Georgia Southern doesn’t give me a lot of confidence that the Demon Deacons are going to run away with this contest.

UNC Greensboro has been getting things done on the defensive end allowing opponents just 45.3 attempts per game and 18 field goals made per game ranking them first and third in the country respectively. Also, opponents are shooting just 39.7% against them overall and just under 30% from distance. Of course, this will be a much different monster in facing Wake Forest, but this team is well coached and should be fired up to face and ACC team. Earlier in the season they gave Virginia all they wanted at Virginia and I expect that same type of effort tonight.
