For our NCAA basketball pick for Friday, we head to Florida where Virginia Tech take on Iowa State in the Emerald Coast Classic. NCAA basketball odds have come out and we are ready!

NCAA Basketball Odds Overview
NCAA Basketball odds have come out with Iowa State as a favorite across the board at -14 -110 at 5 Dimes. For me, though, this puts good value on an improved Virginia Tech team so for my NCAA pick of the day, I will back them getting the points. I don't expect them to win, but I expect them to compete hard.

Virginia Tech Hokies
Virginia Tech comes in averaging 79.8 points per game, shooting 47% from the field, and 28.3% from beyond the arc. I know head coach Buzz Williams would really like to get those percentages up from distance but overall this team's strength is in the interior. They have been hitting the glass hard ranking 11th in the country with 46.2 total rebounds per game. This is a great improvement from last year so far when they ranked last in most rebounding statistics in the ACC. Transfer from South Florida Zach LeDay has been an instant contributor and leads the Hokies at 20 points per game, one of four guys averaging in double figures.

Defensively, Virginia Tech is allowing 64.8 points per game, 35.3% shooting from the field, and 28.8% from beyond the arc. Those are solid numbers against lesser competition, and they take a big step up in class tonight against a talented Iowa State team. Still, overall Williams is a very good basketball coach and this is probably the best team he has had in his short tenure at Virginia Tech. Look for them to get enough stops to hang with the Cyclones.

Iowa State Cyclones
Iowa State is averaging 85.7 points per game, shooting 51.5% in the field, and 37.5% from beyond the arc. This team is very talented from the inside out and have five guys averaging double figures led by Nazareth Mitrou-Long at 17 points per game. New Chicago Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg left the program well intact because this team is loaded. Still, on a neutral floor, against a well coached Virginia Tech team, I don't see them blowing out the Hokies.

Defensively Iowa State is allowing 63 points per game, 35% shooting from the field, and 30% from beyond the arc. They have been getting it done on both ends of the floor but I think Virginia Tech will be the best team they have faced so far this season. It'll be interesting to see how they step up on the defensive end against a Virginia Tech team that will likely play pretty physical.

This is just too many points and for one of your NCAA Basketball picks, I recommend backing Virginia Tech plus the 14. Although I don't think this game goes down to the wire, I do expect Virginia Tech to battle hard and lose by single digits, as compared to double digits. This should be a much better matchup than people anticipate.
