The Big East slate has been rough on the Georgetown Hoyas who find themselves double-digit underdogs on the NCAA basketball odds against No. 1 Villanova.

Villanova-Georgetown Preview

Whether or not Villanova deserves to be considered the top team in the nation right now is not even open for much debate. You also won’t get much argument saying Georgetown isn’t in the same league as the Wildcats, other than, of course, the fact the Hoyas and Villanova both reside in the Big East. That sets the tone for the two to revive their series Wednesday night for the 80th or 81st time on Wednesday, depending which school you ask.

Regardless of how many previous meetings, this one tips at 6:30 PM (ET) from Capital One Center, Fox Sports 1 having the broadcast honors. 5Dimes sent the Wildcats out -13½, that spread growing to -14 overnight while the total also inched up a tad to 158.

’Nova In Middle Of 3-Game Roadie
Jay Wright and the Wildcats enter tonight with 54 wins in their last 59 games, and three of the five losses were to Butler. It’s a remarkable stretch, and was extended with a gutsy performance at St. John’s this past weekend in the first of a 3-game road trip. Villanova fell short of the cover in the 78-71 triumph, but didn’t fold despite a 2½-minute scoring drought at the end.

As an unabashed Patrick Ewing fan, it pains me to see his side struggling in league play. The change at the top was expected to have some effect on a team which wasn’t expected to contend in the first place. Still, after watching the Hoyas get off to a great start by winning 10 of the first 11 out of the chute, it’s beginning to wear on the group going 4-5 since. The latest was a 74-61 lesson at Seton Hall, Georgetown falling just short of +12 on the NCAA basketball odds.

Rivalry Trends, Final Thoughts & A Free Pick
With 6-straight wins in the series, Villanova has been cutting Georgetown’s lead in the rivalry, currently standing 42-37 or 44-36 per the respective SIDs. The streak includes the Wildcats’ past two trips to DC, last year’s 81-55 win for ‘Nova having plenty to cover an 8½ point spread. Both of the 2016 meetings stayed ‘under’ totals in the 140-142 range, and three of the last four on this floor also failing to reach the marks.

Villanova did get the win in New York this past Sunday, but it was the third time in four games the ‘Cats failed to cover. Do I care? Not really, since I’m playing the total anyway with a free college basketball pick on the low side of the total.
