One of the best matchups in college basketball takes place today in the Horizon conference as Valparaiso visits Oakland. Earlier in the season Oakland shocked the Crusaders on the road so the question is can they beat the league-leading Crusaders twice in one season?

Oakland Golden Grizzlies

Oakland currently sits right behind Valparaiso in second place in the Horizon conference and has played good basketball for most of the season. Head coach Greg Kampe is one of my favorites and this year his team is playing better defense. Despite my respect for this mid-major program they are up against a very good Valparaiso team looking for revenge. In their first matchup Oakland pulled off the upset 78-66 by shooting over 47% from the floor and 33.3% from distance but more importantly only giving up 12 turnovers. On the season they have nice statistics across the board and defensively they are allowing opponents to shoot just 39.9% overall and only 31.2% from distance. Offensively their numbers have dipped slightly from seasons past and although they are averaging 77 points per game that is due mostly to their tempo as their shooting percentages rank mostly in the middle of college basketball. What could hurt them tonight is their lack of three-point shooting as they average just 31% from distance which ranks them as one of the worst from beyond the arc statistically.

 Valparaiso Crusaders

In their matchup versus Oakland earlier in the season at home Valparaiso played one of their worst games of the year shooting just 36.2% from the floor and 21.4% from distance. These statistics are a far cry from their 44.5% overall shooting and 33.1% from beyond the arc respectively. Those games happen sometimes even to the best teams and Oakland can be a tough matchup for just about any team in the country. I like this Valparaiso team though and look for them to play a much better ball game than they did in that first matchup. They have nice offensive statistics and are one of the better rebounding teams in the country. As well, they are very good on the defensive end ranking 21st in the country in opponent shooting efficiency and allowing opponents to shoot just 40.2% overall ranking them 25th. Odds makers have set this line really tight for good reason, look for Valparaiso to come in laser focused and pull off the road win.

Odds makers have come out making Valparaiso a +1 underdog and for my NCAA basketball pick, I will take them in this spot. This is a great matchup of two well coached teams but look for the Crusaders to get some revenge tonight.
