Bobby Hurley and Arizona State have fallen on hard times, but the Sun Devils are still the favorites in today's game at lowly Washington State.

Welcome to the latest episode of How the Mighty Have Fallen, this week starring the Arizona State Sun Devils. It wasn’t too terribly long ago – five weeks, to be exact – that Bobby Hurley’s team was the talk of the town, rising to No. 3 in the AP poll and No. 4 according to the coaches.

Since then, however, it has been a quick tumble down the charts, a tumble that should remove ASU from the rankings once votes are tabulated Monday.

While they’re still safely in the field of 68 for the NCAA Tournament, the Sun Devils can ill-afford many more setbacks, especially to the likes of the Washington State Cougars, next up on the Pac-12 fixture for Arizona State. The Sun Devils are 8-point chalks and the total is 157½ on the college basketball odds board.

Cougars 0-8 ATS as Underdogs in Pac-12 Play

Looking to get back to .500 in the conference race, Arizona State instead fell two games below even at Washington on Thursday, with the Huskies claiming a mild 68-64 upset as 2½-point ‘dogs. The Sun Devils battled back to make it a game after trailing by as many as 12 in the first half, but simply gave Washington too many second-chance scoring opportunities while turning it over 15 times. The result was the sixth losing ticket for Arizona State backers in the last seven games.

With just one Pac-12 win in nine tries, Ernie Kent and the Cougars are bringing up the rear of the league and appear headed to their sixth consecutive losing campaign. Washington State drags a four-game skid into this battle after falling to Arizona a few nights ago, the Wildcats putting a 100-72 beat-down on the Cougars, who were getting 12 at home. They have failed to cover all four losses in the string, and all eight defeats in conference play, each time as the underdog.

Rivalry Notes and Final Thoughts

Washington State did, however, win both matchups with ASU a year ago as the underdog, and has won two of the last three at Friel Court. Those wins cut into the advantage the Sun Devils have in the rivalry to 41-38. Home teams have beaten the spread in 17 of the last 22 contests with the "under" a winner in seven of nine.

I’d really like to see the Sun Devils pull out of their funk and become a force again, but I lack the confidence to lay points on them with my NCAAB picks, even against the Cougars. So, put me down on the "under.
