There's plenty to choose from on Tuesday's College Basketball betting board, and we were able to come up with a Tuesday two-fer for all you hoop-heads out there.
Minnesota had won eight in a row, but let one slip away last Wednesday at Purdue. The Gophers led by 11 at the half, but allowed the Boilers to get hot and rally for the victory. Then Saturday Minnesota lost at Maryland 70-58. The Gophers only trailed by three points at halftime, but got outscored 11-2 to begin the second half, and missed on the cover as four-point underdogs.
Minnesota only shot 34 percent from the floor Saturday, and made just three of 22 shots from beyond the arc and 11 of 21 from the FT line. Can the Gophers shoot that poorly again Tuesday night?
Ohio State is coming off a 77-61 victory over Illinois Saturday afternoon. The Buckeyes trailed by a point at the half, and by four early in the second half, but took over with a 15-0 run and covered as seven-point home favorites. OSU shot 60 percent from the field Saturday; that's a tough trick to pull two games in a row.
Just before that victory the Buckeyes shot just 42 percent in a 71-65 loss at home to Iowa.
Tuesday's game will be just Ohio State's second true road game of this season.
Minnesota is 9-0 SU and 5-1 ATS at home this season, and has shot the ball a whole lot better in the Barn than on the road. In believing the Gophers will bounce back at home after the two road losses we'll take 'em for our NCAA Basketball pick tonight, the home team at the short spread.
Free College Basketball Pick: Minnesota -2.5 at 5Dimes
Villanova -4.5 vs. St. John's
The No. 8 Wildcats, coming off their first loss of this season, look to rebound when they take on the No. 24 Red Storm at the Garden.
Villanova started 13-0 this season, with wins over VCU, Michigan, Illinois and Syracuse. But last time out, last Saturday, the Wildcats lost in overtime at Seton Hall 66-61. 'Nova trailed out of the gate 17-3, rallied to force overtime but ran out of gas and went down to defeat as a seven-point road favorite. The Wildcats shot just 31 percent from the floor and went just 20-35 from the FT line. And yet they still had a chance to win that game.
In our mind a performance like that just sets the 'Cats up for a “bounce-back” play.
St. John's owns wins this season over Minnesota and Syracuse, and over its 11-1 start the only loss came against Gonzaga. But the Redmen – errr, Red Storm have lost their last two games, 78-67 to Seton Hall and 73-69 to Butler. They did, however, play their last game without second-leading scorer Rysheed Jordan, due to a personal issue. He is expected to play Tuesday.
We give St. John's a good chance of returning to the NCAA tournament this season, after missing it the last two seasons. But we still also give Villanova the edge in this match-up. Also, the 'Cats have weathered the Storm the last five meetings SU, going 4-1 ATS in the process.
The line on this game opened with Villanova favored by four points or so, and was edging up into mid-Tuesday morning. We'll jump on the 'Cats before the number gets to be too much.
