For Thursday’s NCAA matchups we head to New York where Texas Tech takes on Seton Hall and South Carolina takes on Temple. Odds makers have come out making these games pretty tight on the spread, so is there value in backing the underdogs?

Seton Hall vs Texas Tech

Oddsmakers have come out making Texas tech a -2 favorite in this spot but for my NCAA pick, I’m going to back Seton Hall plus the points. Both of these teams are solid this year but with the way these two teams matchup I think Seton Hall is actually the better squad overall. On the season the Pirates have suffered only one loss to a very good Rhode Island team by just a point while Texas Tech comes in undefeated with their most impressive win throttling Northwestern. Because neither team has played any elite competition so far this season a game like this can be a little bit difficult to gauge but Seton Hall has a senior-dominated roster and this seems to be the season that Kevin Willard has been waiting for. Currently, they are shooting 48.8% from the floor while allowing opponents to shoot just 41.2%, and their overall balance from the interior extended is tough. Texas Tech has some extremely good statistics of their own ranking first in the country with opponents shooting just 33.5% against them. However, this statistic like most of their statistics are a bit inflated.

South Carolina vs Temple

Temple comes in as a -1.5 favorite in this spot, but for my NCAA pick once again I’m going to back the underdog in this spot. Frank Martin doesn’t have the same horses as he did last year and lost quite a bit across the board but you wouldn’t notice it with their 5-1 record on the season. Temple might be a little bit underrated as well having beaten some pretty good teams in Old Dominion, Auburn, and Clemson, but surprisingly losing to LaSalle. I believe this matchup will come down to who plays better defense and in my opinion I believe that falls on South Carolina. Currently the Gamecocks are allowing opponents to shoot just 39.5% from the floor and rank in the top 50 in opponent shooting efficiency. More impressive than that though is the fact they are allowing just 19.7 opponent field goals made per game which ranks them sixth in the country. Temple as well coached and has been good defending from beyond the arc, but outside of that I believe this South Carolina team that shoots over 44% should be able to score. The Owls have some good offensive statistics of their own but this will be the best defense they have played all season.
