We split our two free college basketball picks yesterday, with a pair of underdogs. Just to mix things up a bit we'll split our two Plays of the Day for Tuesday between a home dog and a road favorite.

Any Hope for the Huskers?
Nebraska has been a disappointment so far this season; with most of the roster back after making the NCAA tournament last season we though the Huskers worthy of a preseason NCAA futures bet, at college basketball odds of 100/1. We didn't exactly think Nebraska would win the NCAA Tournament, but if they got far enough we might hedge-bet for some kind of profit. But at 13-10 overall and 5-6 in Big Ten play the Huskers might not even make the Dance.

In playing below expectations Nebraska is 7-12 ATS this season.

But the Huskers made a late run last season, and ended up in the NCAA tournament; can they do it again this season?

Nebraska split two games last week, beating Northwestern at home but losing at Penn State Saturday 56-43. The win/cover over the Wildcats, though, made the Huskers 5-0 both SU and ATS over their last five home games.

Wisconsin rules the roost in the Big Ten at 9-1 in conference play, after dispatching of Northwestern Saturday 65-50. But once again the Badgers came up short against the spread, because they were favored by so much. So that's eight times this season Wisconsin has won a game but not by enough to cover a spread.

The Badgers won the first meeting between these teams this season a month ago in Madison 70-55. Wisconsin led that game by 22 with about eight minutes to go, but took its foot off the gas and came away with only a push as a 15-point favorite.

This is usually a spot where we would take the better team, Wisconsin, playing on the road, where the line is friendlier. When these teams met in Madison the Badgers were favored by 15, and should have covered. But in thinking the Huskers might be up for defending their home turf tonight we'll take the home dog here, plus the points.

Bounce-Back Jayhawks
Coming off a loss last time out Big 12-leading Kansas visits Texas Tech tonight.

The Jayhawks had won five in a row, but fell Saturday at Oklahoma State 67-62. The Jayhawks led that game by 14 in the first half, then lost the second half 37-21. Kansas shot just 40 percent from the floor Saturday, made just 10 of 19 free-throws and committed 18 turnovers, losing outright as a two-point favorite. But in our books that performance just sets the Jayhawks up for a bounce-back play tonight.

At 8-2 in conference play Kansas leads the Big 12 by one game over second-place Oklahoma.

Texas Tech, meanwhile, upset Kansas State last Wednesday, then got blown out Saturday at Iowa State 75-38. That was the fourth time in their last seven games the Red Raiders were held to 43 points or less.

Before this season started we figured Texas Tech would probably finish right near the bottom of the Big 12 again, and at the moment it sits in ninth place at 2-9.

Kansas just beat Tech one month ago in Lawrence 86-54, and not much has changed since then. The Jayhawks led that game at the half 42-25, then scored the first 11 points of the second half to really put the game away. KU shot 53 percent from the floor that night, made 11 of 22 three-pointers and held the Raiders to just 33 percent shooting.

This is a spot where we're going with the better team as our college basketball pick, coming off a loss, on the road, at the more amenable spread.
