Duke finishes up a long week on the road tonight at Georgia Tech, and we have a free NCAA basketball pick for the ACC clash.

Rivalry games, such as the one Duke experienced Thursday night against North Carolina, can sap a lot of energy out of teams and leave them vulnerable in their following games. That’s especially true when your rivals win those matchups, as the Tar Heels did, and leave a team like the Blue Devils to pick up the pieces and get back into the win column against a far lesser foe such as the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

Most of the packed house at McCamish Pavilion in Atlanta will be hoping to witness one of the bigger upsets of the season in the ACC when ESPN turns its cameras on the 6 p.m. (ET) tip. The Blue Devils, a full four games behind Virginia in the conference standings, are giving up 9½-10 points on the college basketball odds board, with the scoreboard target 146½-147½.

Yellow Jackets 2-5 ATS Last 7

Mike Krzyzewski’s crew will be playing their third road game in eight days, and the first two wound up in the loss column. First came an upset defeat at St. John’s last Sunday, with Duke closing as 10½ point chalk in the Big Apple before succumbing to the Red Storm 81-77. The Blue Devils opened as slight chalk for Thursday’s tilt in Chapel Hill, with those odds eventually swinging to UNC -1. The Heels used a 16-2 run to begin the second half to take command of the game and overcome what was a 12-point Duke lead in the first half.

Josh Pastner’s troops aren’t the worst team in the ACC, but the Yellow Jackets are close with a 4-7 league record after losing six of their last seven. Five of those setbacks resulted in losing tickets for Georgia Tech backers, the latest a 77-54 drubbing in Louisville as a 7-point underdog. Josh Okogie has been doing his best to keep the Ramblin’ Wreck in games. The sophomore guard leads the team with an 18.4 PPG average, but the team has been beaten consistently on the glass by giving opponents too many second-chance shots.

Rivalry Notes and Final Thoughts

This year marks the fourth straight season the schools are scheduled against each other just once, and considering Duke’s domination in the series, Georgia Tech is probably fine with that. The Blue Devils have won 11 in a row, and 34 of the last 37 matchups, covering five of six, while totals split in that stretch. The last Yellow Jackets win was January 2010 in Atlanta, a 71-67 upset as 7-point underdogs against then-No. 5 Duke.

The biggest questions tonight are just how motivated the Blue Devils will be against the Yellow Jackets and whether or not Georgia Tech can score enough against a middling Duke defense. With my NCAAB picks, put me down for the "under."
