Are we having fun yet? The value has been difficult to find on the board lately, by my duties have been spelled out clearly. Here I go back to some old-school analysis to find an edge in these Friday Sweet 16 games.

South Carolina vs. Baylor

South Carolina is coming off one of the upsets of the tournament, which is why I don’t make this pick lightly. Because for them to win again we are literally asking for lighting to strike twice in the same spot, and the Gamecocks aren’t exactly a Redwood in the middle of a corn field.

If you didn’t grow up in Dukeville, then I don’t know what is more satisfying than seeing the Blue Devils lose in spectacular fashion. So, when South Carolina beat 2nd seeded Duke last weekend a lot of us were pretty happy about it, especially those who took the underdog Gamecocks plus the points. South Carolina is catching points again here, as they enter this game as 4-point underdogs to the 3rd seeded Baylor Bears.

The fact of the matter is that South Carolina entered the tournament on a 1-8 ATS run, and haven’t followed up a SU win with another ATS win in 5 of their last 6 tries. Baylor’s defense is stifling, and they shoot 6% better from the floor than South Carolina on the year. But what South Carolina has is size, and I’ve defaulted to that time and time again this year. Their starting back court has a significant length advantage over Baylor in this game, which should give them an edge here. I’m taking South Carolina +4 at Bovada as one of my Friday night college basketball picks.

Wisconsin vs. Florida

The Over trend in March Madness has started to even out after the first night of games in the Sweet 16. I’m looking for that trend to keep evening out on Friday night with Wisconsin and Florida.

Two defensively strong teams meet when the upstart 8th seeded Wisconsin Badgers try to continue their tournament run against the 4th seeded Florida Gators. Florida’s defense has been most impressive in the tournament, as they held East Tennessee to 65 points followed by a sparkling effort in which they held Virginia to 39. What really sticks out in that last effort for me is that Florida had the discipline to slow things down, way down, and only attempt 50 shots from the field.

Wisconsin has had success playing even more deliberately lately, and in their game against 1st seeded Villanova they only attempted 49 shots from the field. Along with Florida’s trend above, I’m looking for a game to play out here where both teams attempt less than their 58 or 59 average on the season. One team figures not to break 60 here, which I believe is enough to take the Under of 132 in this game at Bovada.
