  Virginia Tech vs. Wisconsin

East Region, 1st Round
Thursday, March 16 - 7:27 pm E.T

Wisconsin (25-9) and Virginia Tech (22-10) will square off in a NCAA Tournament game on Thursday night at Key Bank Center in Buffalo, New York.  This appears to be an intriguing matchup for a variety of reasons. At the time of this writing (3/13), March Madness betting odds show Wisconsin as a 5.5-point favorite, and there’s a posted total of 138.5. Considering this is a #8 versus #9 seed game, the point spread seems to be a bit lofty. These schools haven’t met on the hardwood since 2008.

Offensive/Defensive Splits

One of the more fascinating set of statistics pertaining to this matchup involve each team’s contrasting offensive and defensive numbers. Virginia Tech is the more athletic and offensively dynamic offensive team compared to Wisconsin. Conversely, the Badgers are unequivocally a better defensive team.

Virginia Tech enters the NCAA Tournament averaging a robust 79.2 points scored per game while shooting an impressive 49.0% from the field. Furthermore, the Hokies have converted on a superb 40.3% of its 3-point attempts. Unfortunately, their defensive play is a whole other story. Virginia Tech has allowed 78.2 points per game, and permitted its opponents to shoot 47.0% over their previous 5 outings.

Wisconsin is a stout defensive team, proven by the allowing just 61.0 points per game, and limiting its opponents to a mere 41.0% shooting. On the other hand, they average just 68.6 points scored per outing, and have shot an uninspiring 43.6% from the field.

Final Analysis and Prediction

Wisconsin started 21-3 through its first 24 games. However, the Badgers enter the NCAA Tournament after going a disappointing 4-6 over its last 10 games.

Virginia Tech was a huge money maker down the final stretch. Specifically, the Hokies were an outstanding 9-1 ATS during their previous 10 games, and that consists of going 8-0 ATS as an underdog. My early lean is to take the points for one of my March Madness predictions.
