The Stanford Cardinal are the 9-seed for Wednesday’s Pac-12 Champ Week game against the No. 8 Arizona State Sun Devils. But Stanford’s the better team, and the sharps know it.

  Stanford vs. Arizona State

Making sharp NCAAB picks is all about separating fact from appearances. The No. 8 Arizona State Sun Devils appear to be in the driver’s seat for Wednesday’s first-round Pac-12 Tournament matchup (3:00 p.m. ET, PAC12) with the No. 9 Stanford Cardinal. ASU finished ahead of the Cardinal in the conference standings, and the Sun Devils swept their season series SU and ATS. But the fact is, Stanford played better basketball this year.

That’s how Ken Pomeroy’s stats see it. Pomeroy has the Cardinal (14-16 SU, 13-15-1 ATS) ranked No. 97 overall in Division I, well ahead of Arizona State (14-17 SU, 14-14-2 ATS) at No. 130. And the sharps were quick to jump on the Stanford bus when the first lines hit the college basketball odds board. The Cardinal opened at –3 and moved to –4 within the first 20 minutes of betting. Then they fell back down as low as –2 shortly afterward.

We’ll gladly recommend Stanford at that bargain price – but only for a small wager, given the results of their last two games with Arizona State. Pomeroy rates the Cardinal four points better than ASU per 100 possessions, so anything better than –3 should be worth a shot.
